Fall 2009

Know the drill? Jump to the Grid: Mon | Tue | Wed | Thu | Fri | Sat | Sun | Midseason | Not Returning

Each Spring, the networks announce their Fall schedules at an event known as the Upfronts where they present information about new and returning series to advertisers in order to sell ads for the coming TV season. Since at least 1999, I’ve put together the new Fall Schedule in grid format as the networks make their announcements at the Upfronts.

FOX: Press Release | Future on FOX blog | Fall Preview
NBC: Press Release | Fall Preview
ABC: Press Release | Fall Preview
CBS: Press Release | Fall Preview
The CW: Press Release | Fall Preview

Midseason series will be listed after the schedule grids; I also list which shows from last season are not returning further on down this page. If you don’t see a show on the grid, don’t panic– they may be holding it for midseason as ABC is doing with Lost.

By default, the time is set for the Central timezone, but you can use the gizmo in the sidebar on the right to change the timezone to Eastern (which is what most people are used to). You’ll need to have Javascript enabled for the script to work. (Known glitch: in some browsers, you may be sent to the front page of the site after you make a timezone page, but if you navigate back to this grid page, the timezone should be the one you requested.)

When you see “(info)” after the name of a new show, you can click on “info” to go to an official page on the network website about the show. When known, premiere dates are listed in parenthesis after the name of the show.

The networks usually make some changes to the schedule before the season actually starts. I’ll be updating the grid with any changes during the summer.

I’ve spent a lot of time putting together this grid and the many pages at TVPicks.net (including TV picks since March 1999 and Fall Grids since at least 2000). If you find any of this stuff helpful, please consider showing your gratitude with a donation or gift (emails are always appreciated as well). Thanks!

Don’t see a show on the grid? It may be returning at midseason or may not be returning at all. Keep on reading for the lists of midseason shows and canceled series.

Returning or Premiering at Midseason

Some midseason series may never air, others may take to the airwaves early, others may not air ’til after what is traditionally considered midseason. “Midseason” has usually meant January or sometime around then. It’s all very subject to change.

“Alternative Series” seems to be code for reality shows, game shows, and shows that involve competitions of some sort. Or pretty much anything that’s not a drama, comedy, or some mix of both.

If a show isn’t on the grid and isn’t listed as for midseason, it’s probably dead– scroll on down the page to find out for sure.

Not Returning at All

These are shows which aren’t listed on the Fall schedule and aren’t scheduled to return at midseason or any other time. In some cases they were canceled or just came to an end, in other cases we only know of their demise because they aren’t mentioned in the announcements of the new schedules.

If you don’t see a show on the grid or on this list, it’s possible I overlooked it or that the show’s fate is otherwise yet To Be Determined.
