News & Notes

There’s a new contest available for readers of this fine little website. Ten lucky readers will receive a free copy of the Masters of Science Fiction: The Complete Series DVD set which was released earlier this month. Find out more about the DVD set and learn how to enter the contest on the Contests Page.

Today’s Amazon Deal of the Day is on James Bond Ultimate Collector’s Set for just $96. I know this isn’t TV-related really, but it’s an awesome deal and I’m tempted so figured I’d mention it in case any of you are interested. Thanks, as always, to those of you who do your online shopping via the links on this site.

Primetime

More of the XXIX Summer Olympics on NBC in primetime, which should include coverage of gymnastics, swimming, beach volleyball, volleyball, and canoeing.

Four more episodes of Jeremiah (Sci-Fi, 6pm - 10pm).

Two new episodes of Some Assembly Required (Discovery, 7pm and 11pm, 7:30pm and 11:30pm). Brian Unger hosts. The first episode covers washable crayons and pipe organs, the second episode covers a high-tech running shoe and a chocolate factory.

New Designed to Sell (HGTV, 7pm and 11pm).

NFL Preseason Football: Carolina Panthers at Philadelphia Eagles (FOX, 7pm).

New episode of Myles of Style (HGTV, 7:30pm and 11:30pm).

A look at iron on a new episode of Modern Marvels (History Channel, 8pm and midnight). “How iron mined in Minnesota is made into steel, iron weapons revolutionize warfare, military metallurgists customize weapons and demonstrate their firepower, and iron magnets.” Hooray for iron!

Season premiere of Blog Cabin (DIY, 8pm and midnight) which is followed by a second new episode (DIY, 8:30pm and 12:30am).

New Rate My Space (HGTV, 8pm and midnight).

New episode of Newlywed, Nearly Dead (Fine Living, 8pm and midnight).

Dr. Bailey’s son is injured and needs surgery in a very stressful rerun of Grey’s Anatomy (ABC, 8pm).

Dr. Bailey: (voice over) “As doctors, we know more about the human body now than at any point in our history. But the miracle of life itself, why people live and die, why they hurt or get hurt is still a mystery. We wanna know the reason, the secret, the answer at the back of the book because the thought of our being all alone down here is just too much for us to bear. But at the end of the day, the fact that we show up for each other, in spite our differences, no matter what we believe, is reason enough to keep believing.”
  from Grey’s Anatomy

New Extreme Living (HGTV, 8:30pm and 12:30am).

Michael, Fiona, and Sam go after someone who is embezzling from a hip-hop mogul’s charity in this new episode of Burn Notice (USA, 9pm and midnight; also on Monday at 10pm). I’m still loving this show, one of my fave summer series. Jeffrey Donovan, Gabrielle Anwar, Bruce Campbell, and Sharon Gless star with Tricia Helfer (of Battlestar Galactica) in a recurring role this season.

Teenage gang members seek revenge and it results in the lockdown of a mall on a new episode of Flashpoint (CBS, 9pm). Enrico Colantoni, Hugh Dillon, Amy Jo Johnson, David Paetkau, Michael Cram, Sergio Di Zio, Ruther Marshal, and Mark Taylor star in this series about an elite team of police officers that deals with hostage situations and other very tricky stuff. I like the show.

Miss the new episode of Mythbusters last night? Lucky for you, it airs again tonight (Discovery, 9pm and 1am).

Duff delivers a cake to an Aquarium in Kentucky and gets a chance to swim with sharks; plus a neapolitan mastiff cake and a gun-toting rubber ducky cake in this new episode of Ace of Cakes (Food Network, 9pm and midnight).

A look at “guns and ammo” on a new episode of The Works (History Channel, 9pm and 1am).

Penn and Teller argue that the utopian ideal of world peace is naive and out-of-sync with human nature on a new episode of Penn & Teller: Bulls…! (Showtime, 9pm, 9:30pm; also on Friday at 9pm and 9:30pm).

Yoji takes Bridget and Sidney to see his mother in Japan on a special new episode of Miami Ink (TLC, 9pm and 11pm).

Guest judges for a new episode of The Gong Show with Dave Attell (Comedy Central, 9pm and 11pm) include Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Adam Carolla, and Dana and Julia.

I’m not sure who the performers are on tonight’s new episode of Live From Abbey Road (Sundance, 9pm; also on Friday at 8pm and 1am). I just know it’s listed as a new episode.

New episode of Randy Jackson Presents: America’s Best Dance Crew (MTV, 9pm, 10pm).

New House Hunters (HGTV, 9pm and 1am).

Kathy Griffin visits Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. in the season finale of Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List (Bravo, 9pm, 10pm, 11pm).

A rerun of Private Practice (ABC, 9pm) from the middle of the strike-shortened first season of the show. This spin-off of Grey’s Anatomy follows Addison to a new life in California. I found the first season uneven, but the cast is mostly strong and there’s potential here– I hope the second season is better.

In a new episode of Reality Bites Back (Comedy Central, 9:30pm and 11:30pm) titled “So You Think You Can Dive?” the amateurs compete in arenas that should be left to professionals.

Late Night

NBC’s Olympic coverage continues in late night.

Ben Stiller on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (Comedy Central, 10pm and midnight).

Bing West on The Colbert Report (Comedy Central, 10:30pm and 12:30am).

Meryl Streep, Aaron Eckhart, Randy Travis on a rerun of The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS, 10:35pm).

Sir Ben Kingsley, Idina Menzel on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (CBS, 11:37pm).

Paul Giamatti, Mitch Rouse, Los Lonely Boys on a rerun of Jimmy Kimmel (ABC, check your local listings).
