Best Bets

Puppy Games 2008 (Animal Planet, 5pm, 8pm, 11pm)
XXIX Summer Olympics: Opening Ceremonies (NBC, 6:30pm)
New Monk (USA, 8pm and 11pm)
New Psych (USA, 9pm and midnight)
Kiefer Sutherland, Jim Gaffigan, Mason Jennings on Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NBC, airs late ’cause of Olympic coverage)

News & Notes

Do you enjoy the Olympics? Having trouble figuring out when/where the events will air? The always awesome Lisa Schmeiser (of TeeVee and Television Without Pity) has put together an Olympics schedule grid which is available in both HTML/Web and Excel format. Thanks, Lisa! (I believe the times listed are for the more-standard Eastern timezone.)

The usual Sci-Fi Friday schedule is pre-empted, they’re just airing movies tonight on Sci-Fi.

Primetime Grid

Fri 7:00 7:30 8:00 8:30 9:00 9:30
ABC Samantha Who War of the Worlds
CBS Ghost Whisperer Rerun Numb3rs Rerun Swingtown
NBC XXIX Summer Olympics: Opening Ceremonies
FOX Hellboy Local Programming
CW WWE Friday Night Smackdown! Local Programming
USA Law & Order: SVU Rerun Monk also at 11pm Psych also at midnight

Primetime

What the Puppy Bowl is to the Super Bowl the Puppy Games 2008 (ANimal Planet, 5pm – 8pm, 8pm – 11pm, 11pm – 2am) are to the Olympic Games. Puppies! Playing! It’ll be awesome! You can find out more on the Animal Planet website.

XXIX Summer Olympics: Opening Ceremonies (NBC, 6:30pm). DVR/VCR Alert: Scheduled with a running time of 270 minutes, though it’s entirely possible these will run long. Though given the fact that these aren’t airing live, maybe they’ll edit it to fit the allotted time.

If you live in the Twin Cities metro area or other parts of Minnesota, you’ll probably see NFL Preseason Football: Seahawks at Vikings on ABC/KSTP starting at 7pm instead of the stuff shown on the grid above.

“Mr Monk Takes a Punch” in tonight’s new episode of Monk (USA, 8pm and 11pm). Monk meets a boxer trying to make a comeback and it inspires Adrian to try (again) to get reinstated as a police detective.

New episode of Wedding SOS (Fine Living, 8pm and 11pm). There’s a penny-pinching fiance involved.

Tonight’s new episode of Psych (USA, 9pm and midnight) is titled “The Greatest Adventure in the History of Basic Cable” so really– how can you not watch? Steven Weber guest stars (you know him from Studio 60, Wings, and many other things). Shawn and Gus seek buried treasure. Awesome! This episode airs again on Saturday at 1pm and 10pm on USA.

New episode of Shockwave (History Channel, 9pm and 1am). A tornado hits a pig farm, a deaf motorcyclist can’t hear warnings and crashses, a small plane crashes, a boy dangles from a ski lift, and so on.

New episode of Swingtown (CBS, 9pm).

New episode of Say Yes to the Dress (TLC, 9pm and midnight).

Rerun of the latest new episode of The Cleaner (A&E, 9pm and 1am).

New episode of The Soup (E!, 9pm and 11:30pm; also at 9am and 10pm on Saturday).

New episode of Rock the Reception (TLC, 9:30pm and 12:30am).

Late Night

Rerun of Criminal Minds (A&E, 10pm and 2am).

A would be astronaut is treated by House (USA, 10pm).

“Stew” is the topic on Good Eats (10pm and 1am).

Donald Trump, Dwayne Kennedy on The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS, 10:35pm).

Scarlett Johansson, Luke Ford, Chris Cornell on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (NBC, airs later than usual ’cause of Olympics).

Kiefer Sutherland, Jim Gaffigan, Mason Jennings on Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NBC, will probably air later than usual).

Toby Keith, Colin Hanks (of Roswell) on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (CBS, 11:37pm).

Ben Stiller, Danica McKellar, Airbourne on Jimmy Kimmel (ABC, check your local listings).

There’s no Last Call with Carson Daly (NBC, check your local listings) as it’s pre-empted for Olympic coverage.
