Best Bets

Jack Lemmon movies on TCM (see below)
Kristin Davis (of Sex and the City), Ira Glass (of This American Life), Ryan Bingham on Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NBC, 11:37pm)
Richard Lewis, Duffy on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (CBS, 11:37pm)
Shia LaBeouf, Elizabeth Berkley, Neil Diamond on Jimmy Kimmel (ABC, check your local listings)

News & Notes

Have a great holiday weekend! I’m not yet sure if I’ll be doing any updates this weekend or just working on behind-the-scenes improvements on the site. If you’re gonna watch some TV this weekend, check the site or watch for updates in the usual places.

When I don’t make updates to the website (and even when I do), I may post the occasional isolated pick, news about website improvements, or bit of TV natter via twitter.

Don’t expect any sort of normal schedule given it’s a holiday weekend, there’ll be marathons and movies airing all over the place instead of usual programming. Lots of shows are in reruns or just pre-empted.

Daytime

NCIS marathon on USA (USA, 10am – 10pm); USA will also air an NCIS marathon on Monday (USA, 5am – 6pm on Memorial Day).

Rerun of the “Lifesaving Lessons from Families Like Yours” episode of Oprah (syndicated, check your local listings). Originally aired back in June 2007. The description says “if you’ve ever driven after having just one drink, stop and listen.” I’d suggest that this episode and the one about Tracey Gold’s drunk driving conviction are two shows that should be viewed by anyone who is still comfortable driving after having drinks.

Primetime Grid

Fri 7:00 7:30 8:00 8:30 9:00 9:30
ABC Grey’s Anatomy Rerun 20/20
CBS Ghost Whisperer Rerun Ghost Whisperer Rerun Numb3rs Rerun
NBC Outrageous Moments Rerun Outrageous Moments Rerun Dateline NBC
FOX Cheaper By the Dozen Local Programming
CW WWE Friday Night Smackdown! Local Programming
SciFi Solar Attack Scorcher

Primetime

The shows that usually air on the Sci-Fi Channel on Friday night aren’t on tonight because it’s a holiday weekend. Or something like that. So no new (or old) episodes of Sarah Jane Adventures, Doctor Who, or Battlestar Galactica tonight. Sorry! They’ll all be back next Friday.

College Softball: NCAA Super Regional, Game 1: Arizona vs. Oklahoma (ESPN, 6:30pm).

Jack Lemmon movies are featured on Turner Classic Movies tonight in something they’re calling “A Twist of Lemmon”: How To Murder Your Wife (TCM, 7pm), The Out-of-Towners (TCM, 9:15pm, letterboxed), and The Odd Couple (TCM, 11pm, letterboxed). All are true classics and feature excellent performances.

If you’re a fan of Grey’s Anatomy and somehow missed the two-hour season finale last night (or want to see it again), it airs again tonight (ABC, 7pm – 9pm). I think it was a pretty good finale and I’m looking forward to next season.

TV Land airs some classic episodes of M*A*S*H (TV Land, 7pm – 9pm). Episodes are “The Interview,” “Dear Dad,” “Dead Dad . . . Again,” and “Dear Dad . . . Three”.

Baseball: Angels at White Sox (WGN, 7pm).

NBA hoops: Spurs at Lakers (TNT, 8pm).

I’ve really enjoyed the series of movies based on the “Jesse Stone” books by Robert B. Parker. Tom Selleck stars in them and they’ve aired on CBS. You can catch the first one, Stone Cold (Hallmark, 8pm; also at 5pm on Saturday), on the Hallmark Channel, it’s also available on DVD as are the others including the latest one (Jesse Stone: Sea Change). I believe filming has completed on the next film in the series (Jesse Stone: Thin Ice) and it should air later this year on CBS.

The final two from this season of American Idol are guests on Larry King Live (CNN, 8pm, 11pm, 2am, 4am). Sounds like it’s a two-part episode that continues on Monday.

The police take another look at the 1981 death of Barbara Winn (which was originally ruled a suicide) and police re-investigate the murder of Janet Chandler after college students make a documentary about the case on a new Dateline NBC (NBC, 8pm – 10pm).

Special 90-minute edition of Baseball Tonight (ESPN, 8:30pm – 10pm).

More things blow up and crash and such in a new Shockwave (History Channel, 9pm and 1am). Sounds like an eventful episode (as usual), here’s the description: “a Stealth fighter crashes into a neighborhood; a hot air balloon that looks like Smokey Bear gets snagged on an electrified radio tower, trapping two boys; a motorcycle daredevil crashes; Nevada casino bombing; and a stunt skier tumbles.”

Don and the team investigate attacks occuring on highways in a rerun of Numb3rs (CBS, 9pm) from season three.

Amita: “What’s wrong Larry? Is there anything you want to talk about?”
Larry: “No, I find that any discussion of my inner feelings could be catastrophic. It’s like a star that finally burn up all of it’s fuel and then collapses in on top of itself.”
Amita: “I was just trying to be supportive here Larry, not destroy a solar system.”
  from Numb3rs

“Stories of forgiveness” on a new 20/20 (ABC, 9pm). A man prosecuted for a murder he didn’t commit, victims of crime and families of crime victims.

Late Night

Liv Tyler, Sue Johanson, Tommy Johnagin on The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS, 10:35pm).

Terry Bradshaw, Colbie Caillat, Ray Sanders on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (NBC, 10:35pm).

Kristin Davis (of Sex and the City), Ira Glass (of This American Life), Ryan Bingham on Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NBC, 11:37pm).

Richard Lewis, Duffy on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (CBS, 11:37pm).

Shia LaBeouf, Elizabeth Berkley, Neil Diamond on Jimmy Kimmel (ABC, check your local listings).

Dov Davidoff, Jack McBrayer (of 30 Rock), George Stanford on a rerun of Last Call with Carson Daly (NBC, check your local listings).

Sugar Hill (TCM, 1am) is the feature on TCM Underground. You can read more about the movie there.

Tunnel dwellers use the London Underground as a “hunting ground” in the 1973 movie Death Line (TCM, 2:45am).

As indicated in the very post you’re commenting on, the musical group was “Duffy” or at least that’s the one that was scheduled (I didn’t actually watch the episode and sometimes changes occur at the last minute).
