News & Notes

Bravo announced their schedule today. Read the press release to find out which of their original shows will return and to learn about the new shows and specials they have planned.

CBS has announced their summer schedule. That press release is also worth a look, to read about new shows tha CBS will air this summer.

You can now pre-order The Wire - The Complete Fifth Season on DVD. The set hits stores on August 12th, but if you pre-order you get a discount on the set. As always, I highly recommend Amazon (and am grateful to all of you who shop there via the TVPicks.net Store and the other links on this site).

If you or someone you know is a Mac user, you should really check out the new MacHeist software bundle. You can get 12 good (and some great) applications for 80% off what you’d pay for them individually. It’s a seriously good deal and one I highly recommend. I bought the last bundle and will probably buy this one even though some applications are repeats from previous bundles– the deal is just that good. [Full disclosure: if you head over to the site via my link and buy the bundle, I get credit for a referral which can help me earn additional free applications. Trust me though, I’d be recommending this deal even if that wasn’t a factor.]

If any of you hang out in Second Life, it’s my Rez Day today and you’re surely welcome to stop by the open house I’ll be having from 8pm to 10pm in world. Message “Laurel Oh” for a landmark.

Primetime

Alec Baldwin interviews Gene Wilder about his extensive career in the new special Role Model: Gene Wilder (TCM, 7pm - 8pm; airs again at midnight). Followed by The Producers (TCM, 8:15pm, letterboxed), Blazing Saddles (TCM, 10pm, letterboxed), and (after another airing of Role Model: Gene Wilder) Start The Revolution Without Me (TCM, 1:15am, letterboxed).

A dog is accused of killing his owner and Abby puts her career on the line to prove the dog’s innocence in this new episode of NCIS (CBS, 7pm). Aw! I love Abby! She and Garcia from Criminal Minds are my two favorite female characters on TV right now. I heard from a few NCIS fans after my comments last week– I should be clear, I’ve always recommended this show and thought it a good “second string” show, but I’ve grown to appreciate it even more after catching up with the episodes I’d missed. It’s fun and it’s different than any other crime show on the air. I’m glad to hear that some of you gave it a chance during the WGA strike. Five more new episodes this season after this one, the show will be back next season.

Life stories of coaches and basketball players who attended black colleges and universities reveal aspects of the civil rights movement in Black Magic (ESPN Classic, 7pm - 9pm; airs again tomorrow night at 7pm).

The top seven perform live on a new American Idol (FOX, 7pm - 8:02pm).

The geeks become firefighters for the day and must rescue the beauties from a burning building on a new Beauty and the Geek (CW, 7pm). And the beauties are subjected to a “smelly challenge” of some sort.

Jim realizes Andy forgot to use a gift certificate he gave him so he uses it himself (?!) on a new According to Jim (ABC, 7pm). I don’t actually recommend this show, but feel obligated to note that it returns with new episodes tonight. I do it for you folks, in case someone out there is a fan.

The competitors are awakened by chickens running around their sleeping quarters on a new Hell’s Kitchen (FOX, 8:02pm). Eek! As you probably guessed, the chefs are asked to pluck, dress, cook, and serve the chickens.

Rerun of the “Acid Queen” episode of Reaper (CW, 8pm). Andi’s life is threatened by an escaped soul. Oh no! Michael Ian Black and Ken Marino guest star.

New episode of Last Restaurant Standing (BBC America, 8pm, 11pm, 1am).

A look at the “Biggest Things in Space” on a new episode of The Universe (History Channel, 8pm and midnight).

James Blunt performs on Dancing with the Stars (ABC, 8pm - 9:02pm). And kids ten and under perform in a mini-competition again this week.

Shirley (Candice Bergen) asks Alan Shore (James Spader) to argue her case in court on a new Boston Legal (ABC, 9pm); she wants to end the suffering of her father (who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease). Meanwhile Jerry gets in trouble with his new girlfriend. And Carl Sack (John Larroquette) actually gets to try a case too. I kinda love this show in a way and really hope ABC will pick it up for another season. Only four more episodes for this season, no word yet on a renewal for next season. If you’re a fan of this quirky David E. Kelley series, I recommend spending some time on the official website for the show, and contacting ABC to tell them how you feel. And of course you should watch the show and get friends to watch.

Hooray! At long last Law & Order: SVU (NBC, 9pm) is back with a new episode. Olivia goes undercover in prison after a rape kit is stolen. I believe there are four more new episodes after this one; the show will be back next season. This episode will air again on USA on Saturday, April 26th at 10pm and on NBC on Sunday, April 27th at 9pm (assuming NBC doesn’t make adjustments to their schedule between now and then).

Wayne gets a surprise visitor at work, Dahlia continues to struggle with her double life, Cael meets some other Travellers along the road on a new episode of The Riches (FX, 9pm, 10pm, midnight).

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) discusses the role of basketball in his life, a profile of professional baseball player Torii Hunter, examining the tragic death of minor league baseball coach Mike Coolbaugh, and Lee Benson Jr. plays professional basketball overseas on a new REAL Sports with Bryant Gumbel (HBO, 9pm).

Andrew visits Guangzhou in China on a new Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern (Travel Channel, 9pm, 10pm, 1am).

A letter written by a suspicious young mother helps solve her own murder on a new 48 Hours Mystery (CBS, 9pm).

Rerun of “The Bone Yard” episode of NCIS (USA, 9pm) from season two. They find a mob dumping ground. Fornell ends up arrested and it’s up to Gibbs and the team to clear his name. It’s always cool when Joe Spano guest stars as FBI Agent Fornell. Other notable things in this episode: the agents spar at the beginning of the episode and Tony and Kate go undercover as a couple.

Rerun of “The Woman in the Tunnel” episode of Bones (TNT, 9pm) from season one. The remains of a filmmaker are found underground, the filmmaker had been working on a project about the homeless who live in the tunnels. David Denman is among the guest stars, Angel fans will remember him for having played “Skip” on that show.

Angela: “I don’t know how to talk to crazy people, unless I’m dating them.”
Brennan: “I’m not sure he’s actually clinically insane.”
Angela: “Okay, I don’t know how to talk to people who live underground and who might have tossed a documentary film maker down a hole.”

Oprah’s 4 interviews with Jill Bolte Taylor were the first that Oprah did after Eckhart Tolle and they take everything Tolle talks about to another level. Oprah’s copy of Jill’s book, MY STROKE OF INSIGHT, was dog-eared and all marked up and kept reading from it the way she read from A New Earth and recommended it highly.

Oprah’s recommendation was enough for me. I read My Stroke of Insight and I loved it too. This story is as inspiring as The Last Lecture or Tuesdays with Morrie - and even better, it has a Happy Ending!

I bought the book on Amazon because they have it for 40% off retail and they also had an amazing interview with Dr Taylor that I haven’t seen anywhere else - Here is the Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/My-Stroke-Insight-Scientists-Personal/dp/0670020745/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1211471755&sr=1-2

I read “My Stroke of Insight” in one sitting - I couldn’t put it down. I laughed. I cried. It was a fantastic book (I heard it’s a NYTimes Bestseller and I can see why!), but I also think it will be the start of a new, transformative Movement! No one wants to have a stroke as Jill Bolte Taylor did, but her experience can teach us all how to live better lives. Her TED.com speech was one of the most incredibly moving, stimulating, wonderful videos I’ve ever seen. Her Oprah Soul Series interviews were fascinating. They should make a movie of her life so everyone sees it. This is the Real Deal and gives me hope for humanity.
