News & Notes
Primetime programming on CBS may start late depending on how long the afternoon football games run; I usually add extra recording time to any CBS shows I record on Sunday night during football season.
It’s a free preview weekend for Showtime for some folks (including those with DirecTV).
Daytime
Law & Order: Criminal Intent marathon (USA, all day).
The outstanding Hugo Award-winning “Girl in the Fireplace” episode of Doctor Who (BBC America, 11am).
Football: Packers at Vikings (FOX, Noon). Game may vary depending on where you live.
30 Rock mini-marathon (Bravo, Noon - 3pm).
Torchwood mini-marathon (BBC America, 2pm - ). In case you missed some episodes and need to catch up with this Doctor Who spinoff.
Football: Broncos at Colts (CBS, 3pm). Game may vary.
Primetime
Football Night in America (NBC, 6pm).
Two hour season premiere of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (ABC, 6pm - 8pm). The team renovates a home and a learning center in Hawaii. This episode will be available on ABC.com as of Monday.
Special 90-minute edition of 60 Minutes (CBS, 6:30pm - 8pm). Katie Couric interviews Carolyn Riley, a mother accused of “medicating her four-year-old child to death.” This episode includes an in-depth look at that case and at the large number of small children who are now diagnosed as bipolar.
The Enduring Spirit of Roberto Clemente (ESPN, 7pm).
Homer becomes an opera star on The Simpsons (FOX, 7pm), but only while lying down (!). Maya Rudolph and Placido Domingo guest star.
My references to The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh (ESPN Classic, 7pm, 9pm) tend to confuse people. But then most of my pop culture references confuse people I know.
Football: Eagles at Giants (NBC, 7:15pm).
Bobby protests soda machines in school to impress a girl on King of the Hill (FOX, 7:30pm). And then things snowball from there (’cuz this is TV, after all).
Season premiere of Dexter (Showtime, 8pm, 10pm). Michael C. Hall plays Dexter, a forensics expert and serial killer (of killers). Keith Carradine shows up as an FBI agent who is looking into some murders (committed by you-know-who). Julie Benz (of Angel) continues on as Dexter’s girlfriend, though she’s a bit suspicious of him now.
Season premiere of Desperate Housewives (ABC, 8pm). Nathan Fillion (of Drive, Firefly) and Dana Delany (of China Beach) are the new neighbors on Wisteria Lane who appear to (of course) have secrets of their own. This season picks up where last left off, then jumps ahead a month or so. Yes, you’ll find out what happened with Edie and watch as others try to keep their secrets. It certainly looks like one could jump into the series at this point if one wanted to, I wasn’t lost at all watching this episode (after missing many episodes over the years).
Mackenzie Phillips (of One Day at a Time guest stars on Cold Case (CBS, 8pm). The team re-opens the 1998 case of a reportedly promiscuous 15-year-old girl who was fatally beaten. Episode is directed by Roxann Dawson (of Star Trek: Voyager) who is also a producer on this series.
Things sure are crazy in the National League, eh? If you follow baseball, you may want to check out tonight’s two-hour live edition of Baseball Tonight (ESPN, 8pm - 10pm).
2001: A Space Odyssey (TCM, 8:45pm, letterboxed).
Expect the usual heavy dose of drama in the season premiere of Brothers & Sisters (ABC, 9pm). It’s been a year since a major loss and three weeks since the family heard from Justin. Everything’s a mess, as usual. Boy did this show grow and evolve last season and develop into an involving family drama. Can’t wait to see what happens this year.
Kevin Pollak is the new, not-so-wonderful District Attorney on Shark (CBS, 9pm). I imagine Stark and company will butt heads with him many times this season. Jeri Ryan is now working as part of Stark’s team (or as co-head of his team). In this new episode, the team re-opens the case of the murder of Isaac’s fiance and Stark wants them to keep that info from Isaac. ‘Course this is tricky since he is part of the team and he’s also now dating a team member. D’oh! Kurt Fuller is among the guest stars.
Larry regrets getting Richard Lewis’ girlfriend a job on Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO, 9pm). And “a doggie-bag dispute dooms a waiter.”
The brothers are back in the season premiere of Brotherhood (Showtime, 9pm, 11:30pm). Michael tries to re-establish his territory and Tommy outmaneuvers a U.S. attorney. Jason Clarke, Jason Isaacs, Fionnula Flanagan, Annabeth Gish, and Ethan Embry star.
Late Night
Miss the first episodes of Chuck and/or Journeyman? They’re both well-worth checking out. They air again tonight on Sci-Fi: Chuck (Sci-Fi, 10pm), Journeyman (Sci-Fi, 11pm).
I didn’t like the first episode of Life as much as those two, but it also airs again tonight: Life (USA, 11pm).
