News & Notes

I spun my TV picks off of my weblog and onto their own page in March 1999. So I’ve been at this for 8 years! Crazy! Is it any wonder that I’m a bit burned out? As always, your support is very much appreciated.

Heroes returns with new episodes in April (near the end of the month, alas).

Primetime

Gene Kelly stars in The Pirate (TCM, 7pm), An American In Paris (TCM, 9pm), Brigadoon (TCM, 11pm, letterboxed), and Ziegfield Follies (TCM, 1am). Vincente Minnelli directed the first three and also had a hand in directing the fourth.

Barney tries to sabotage things when Ted and Robin begin moving in together on How I Met Your Mother (CBS, 7pm).

Chris fills in for the neighborhood DJ on Everybody Hates Chris (CW, 7pm).

T-Bag’s “reign of terror” continues on Prison Break (FOX, 7pm). Remember when Robert Knepper played nice likeable characters? He’s not doing that on this show, that’s for show.

Mark Ruffalo on Inside the Actors Studio (Bravo, 7pm). I wonder if he’ll talk about The Beat but I imagine I’m one of the few people who is wondering that.

Tom Bergeron and Samantha Harris host the season premiere of Dancing with the Stars (ABC, 7pm – 9pm). The competitors this time around are: Clyde Drexler (former NBA star), boxer Laila Ali, Billy Ray Cyrus (singer and actor), Leeza Gibbons (talk show host), Joey Fatone (of NSync), Shandi Finnessey (Miss USA 2004), Heather Mills (who used to be married to Paul McCartney), Apolo Anton Ohno (Olympic gold medalist), Paulina Porizkova (model), John Ratzenberger (of Cheers), and Ian Ziering (of Beverly Hills 90210). Ratzenberger replaces Victor Pastore (of The Sopranos) who was originally supposed to compete.

Firefighters hold the briefcases instead of models on Deal or No Deal (NBC, 7pm – 9pm).

Sandra Bernhard and Patrick Breen guest star on The New Adventures of Old Christine (CBS, 7:30pm). Christine tries to become more politically active and ends up clashing bigtime with an activist.

When Alan realizes that Jake won’t be a kid for much longer, he tries to do a whole lot of father-son bonding all at once on Two and a Half Men (CBS, 8pm). Oh-oh.

Nigella Lawson is profiled on Chefography (Food Network, 8pm and 11pm). Preceeded by a rerun of the Ina Garten (Barefoot Contessa) episode of Chefography (Food Network, 7pm and 2am).

Jack copes, yet again, with even more bad news on 24 (FOX, 8pm). And the government considers some controversial strategies (so what else is new?).

One of the mob bosses threatens Mom Donnelly (Kate Mulgrew) on The Black Donnellys (NBC, 9pm) if the brothers don’t cough up some money. Tommy ends up having to do something he doesn’t want to do for the sake of his family. Meanwhile, Sean gets out of the hospital and the other brothers are bumbling around as per usual. I like this episode because we get to see different sides of the characters and see more of Sean and their mother, etc.

The Riches (FX, 9pm – 10:08pm, 10:08pm – 11:16pm) now really become the Riches as they try to step into the roles of the family whose house they live in. Eddie Izzard goes golfing and goes on a job interview. Minnie Driver and the kids try to get their R.V. back when it’s towed. And so on. I loved the pilot and I like this episode. DVR/VCR Alert: Runs 68 minutes.

Jon Stewart (of The Daily Show) is the guest on Sit Down Comedy With David Steinberg (TV Land, 9pm).

A second special hour-long episode of Unwrapped (Food Network, 9pm and midnight) that looks at the Food Network.

John Waters hosts the series premiere of ‘Til Death Do Us Part (Court TV, 9pm). It’s a new show that dramatizes the story of some couples– needless to say, these stories end with murders.

Colin Ferguson and Leslie Bibb guest star on CSI: Miami (CBS, 9pm). A wealthy real estate mogul is killed.

Late Night
