Reruns of series premieres of Jericho (CBS, 7pm) and Kidnapped (NBC, 9pm)

News & Notes

I’ve started putting together a new FAQ for this site; it includes a key for the colors used in the new grid here and other (I hope) useful stuff.

Daytime

Nothing but Bonanza during the day and The Andy Griffith Show at night on TV Land today.

Primetime

The original The Manchurian Candidate (TCM, 7pm) is a classic, though creepy, film. It airs as part of TCM’s “Essential” series with host Robert Osborne with film critic Molly Haskell.

The Shield begins airing in syndication in many markets; check your local listings if you want to watch this show from the very beginning.

If you missed the series premieres of Jericho (CBS, 7pm) or Kidnapped (NBC, 9pm) earlier in the week, I highly recommend that you check them out tonight as their two of my favorite shows of the new season. The pilot for Jericho is a bit slow, especially when CBS gave away so much of the plot– but the second episode really rocks (and airs soon). (Click on the series names for my fall previews of the shows).

Audiotapes of Los Angeles Police Department detectives interviewing Paris Hilton as a witness regarding the 2004 burglary of Joe Francis (the creator of “Girls Gone Wild” on Dateline NBC (NBC, 7pm).

John O’Hurley hosts Mrs. America 2006 (We, 7pm).

If you’re a fan of Paula Deen, you might want to watch Food Network tonight as she’s on Emeril Live (Food, 7pm), profiled on Chefography (Food, 8pm), and featured in the special Paula’s Cooking Class (Food, 9pm).

I really didn’t care for the series premiere of Smith (CBS, 8pm), but I know some others found it worth a look.

I liked the season premiere of Law & Order: SVU (NBC, 8pm) that aired earlier this week, though it definitely was heavy on Olivia (Mariska Hargitay) and that one FBI agent (played by Marcia Gay Harden) and there was very little of everyone else. This all sets up a leave of absence for Hargitay (and her character) from the show (Hargitay is taking some time off to spend time with her new baby).

Another cheesy Sci-Fi channel movie: Kraken: Tentacles of the Deep (Sci-Fi, 8pm).

Late Night

New episode of Mad TV (FOX, 10pm).

Mary Lynn Rajskub (”Chloe” on 24) guest stars on a new episode of Talk Show with Spike Feresten (FOX, 11pm). I thought this episode wasn’t as good as the first one (with Andy Richter) that aired last week, but then I’m just not impressed by this show.

Rerun of the rather fun episode of Saturday Night Live (NBC, check your local listings) from last season with host Steve Martin and musical guest Prince. I haven’t enjoyed much of many episodes in recent years, but there were some good bits in this one. The season premiere airs on October 1st.
