News & Notes:

See any new shows you like? I’ve been hard on the new FOX shows, but you’d understand if you’d seen the other great new shows that will be starting up soon. It may not yet show, but this really is going to be a very interesting fall with the debut of a lot of entertaining and ambitious new shows. I’m very excited! Some of the shows I can’t wait for you to see: Heroes, The Nine, Jericho, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Kidnapped, Men In Trees, Knights of Prosperity, and . . . well, I’m just getting started. Shows that debut later which rock: Day Break and The Black Donnellys. And these are just the shows I’m really excited about, there are other shows that are pretty solid or entertaining too (and which may very well improve on their first episodes). And, of course, there are plenty of cool shows returning to the schedule. It looks like my Tivo will be in overdrive this season.

I hope you’re checking out my fall previews of the new shows as they launch as I think I’m providing useful information (that’s certainly my goal); the series premieres for these shows may have already aired, but you still may want to read about the shows if you haven’t already: Vanished, Justice, and Standoff. You can also read a very early take on a cool new show that will air starting in November: Day Break. I will be covering all the new shows; keep an eye on the Fall Schedule Grid or Show Info page to see these or click on the names of new series when they are clickable thoughout the site. My previews should be up by the day a show premieres; some will be going up earlier; premiere dates are listed on both the grid and the show info page.

TV DVD sets released yesterday: Alf Season 4, second half of season one of Commander-in-Chief, Hustle Season 1, Lost Season 2, Oz Season 6, Oz Seasons 1-6, Red Dwarf Complete Collection, and Supernatural Season 1.

TV DVD sets due out Tuesday (still time to pre-order!): Diagnosis Murder Season 1, Grey’s Anatomy Season 2, Las Vegas Season 3, Moonlighting Season 4, The Office (US) Season 2, Roseanne Season 5, Smallville Season 5, Smallville Seasons 1-5, Stella Season 1, and Teen Titans Season 2.

Times listed are for the Central timezone, please adjust accordingly (if necessary).

Miss any or all episodes of Eureka? It may be my favorite new show of the summer. Fun stuff about a quirky town full of inventors. Catch a marathon today (Sci-Fi, 4pm - 10pm) that covers most of the episodes thus far (but not the pilot movie). I think you can enjoy the show just fine without having seen the pilot, though you’ll want to catch it at some point.

Fargo: “Um, you might want to be careful with this. It’s a portable generator.”
Carter: “So?”
Fargo: “A fission powered portable generator.”
Carter: “Okay. Don’t sleep on the nuclear powered device. Good safety tip.”
from the “Many Happy Returns” episode of Eureka

Baseball: Chicago White Sox at Boston Red Sox (ESPN, 6pm).

A pregnant woman’s body is found in a body of water on a new episode of Bones (FOX, 7pm). The husband is, of course, a suspect. Jessica Capshaw (of The Practice) is among the guest stars. Of course I’m tuning in for the interesting interplay between the characters, not for the actual case. I’m still enjoying this show and hope that they don’t mess it up by focusing too much on what happened to Brennan’s parents (I remember all too well how that type of thing made a mess of Crossing Jordan). In case I haven’t mentioned it, this is a show you can jump into easily enough. (This season will bring us a lot of serialized dramas, standalone episodes are gonna be in the minority pretty soon).

One again, the competitors who have received the fewest votes get to perform and try to stay on the show on Rock Star: Supernova (CBS, 7pm).

A music producer dies and a young woman pleads self-defense on a new episode of Justice (FOX, 8pm). Amanda Seyfried guest stars (she’ll always be Veronica Mars‘ best pal Lily Kane to me). I was hard on this show in my preview; I really do hope that this episode is better than the first one (and, of course, I’ll be checking it out to find out).

Rerun of the “My Fallen Idol” episode of Scrubs (NBC, 8pm). Enjoy these reruns while they last as we won’t be getting new episodes of this fine show ’til midseason. At least reruns of the show should start showing up in syndication and on cable soon.

A case gets very personal for the team in the “Heroes” episode of CSI: NY (CBS, 8pm).

The “My Deja Vu My Deja Vu” episode of Scrubs (NBC, 8:30pm).

New episode of Project Runway (Bravo, 9pm, 11pm, midnight, with a zillion more airings this week).

New episode of Blade: The Series (Spike, 9pm and 10pm).

The Top 10 Web Gems of All-Time on Baseball Tonight (ESPN, 9pm). Or at least the best web gems they have footage of (their team best lists seemed to focus more on recent plays). Be warned that the show may start late depending on how long the game before it runs.

Katie Couric and a team of correspondents take a look at “the status of U.S. homeland security, the threat of future attacks, and how Americans are coping after the terrorism of Sept. 11, 2001″ in Five Years Later: How Safe Are We? (CBS, 9pm). Includes an interview with the President.

Rerun of Hustle (AMC, 9pm, 12:15am). Robert Vaughn is among the stars of this fun series about con artists from the BBC and AMC. Remember that episodes of this show run long (75 minutes).

Wendy Moniz (of The Guardian, Guiding Light) guest stars in the “House of Cards” episode of Law & Order (NBC, 9pm). A mother is murdered and her child is kidnapped.

Sherman Hemsley (of The Jeffersons) is Living in TV Land (TV Land, 9pm).

Patton Oswalt and Damien Marley on The Henry Rollins Show (IFC, 9:30pm and 1:30am).

Late Night

“Tuna: The Other Red Meat” episode of Good Eats (Food Network, 10pm and 1am).

Rebroadcast of the most recent episode of Saved (TNT, 10pm).

Ben Affleck, James Carville, Dwight Yoakam on The Tonight Show (NBC, 10:35pm).

David Duchovny (of The X-Files), Greg Behrendt, OK Go on Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NBC, 11:37pm).

Ron Livingston (of Standoff), Toby Keith on Jimmy Kimmel (ABC, check your local listings).

Rebroadcast of the lastest new episode of The 4400 (USA, midnight).

Check out Sue Trowbridge’s Late Night Lineups page for a full list of late night talk show guests (and lists of some daytime guests too).

Thursday Daytime

Alan Alda, Rachel Bilson (of The O.C.) on Live with Regis and Kelly (check your local listings).

Maggie Gyllenhaal, Abigail Breslin on The View (ABC, check your local listings).

Brad Garrett, Patrice Oneal, Ivan Koumaev on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (syndicated, check your local listings).
