Featured Pick
I wasn’t wild about the first episode of Bones, but as the first season of the show wore on, I was won over. It’s a fun show. Emily Deschanel stars as Temperance Brennan, a forensic anthropologist who also writes novels (the character is loosely based on author Kathy Reichs and/or the character in her books). David Boreanaz (of Angel) plays Booth, an FBI agent she works with. She’s also got a nifty team at her lab and these characters really do grow on you.
The cases on the show are okay, but it’s really the character interplay that’s the most fun. Booth and Brennan (Boreanaz and Deschanel) have chemistry; the rest of the team has a fun relationship. It’s not a show one raves about, but it is a surprisingly enjoyable show– I find I’m always happy to find a new episode on my Tivo.
In tonight’s season premiere, Brennan returns from a vacation of some sort to find that she’s got a new boss; Tamara Taylor guest stars as the new Head of Forensics at the Jeffersonian Institute. It also turns out that Booth has a history with her (oh-oh). I’ve always liked Taylor, she’s had memorable guest appearances on a number of good shows (click on her name to go to her entry at IMDB). Dr. Goodman (Jonathan Adams) is her boss, she’s the boss of Brennan and her team; Jonathan Adams isn’t a regular this year, Goodman will be a recurring character (he’s not in this episode).
Brennan and Booth and company investigate deaths at the scene of a train accident; it all gets especially complicated when it turns out a Senator was killed in the crash and everything isn’t what it seems (of course, or this would be a very boring and short episode). This episode also follows-up on last season’s finale involving the death of Brennan’s mother.
All in all, a good start to a second season of this fun show– I’m looking forward to future episodes.
Primetime
Season premiere of Bones (FOX, 7pm). Today’s featured pick (see above).
Series premiere of Justice (FOX, 8pm). I was underwhelmed by this episode and can’t recommend it (unless you just like to catch new shows to check them out); you can read all about the show and what I thought about the first episode in my fall preview (click on the show’s name to get to it).
The Janitor narrates the “His Story III” episode of Scrubs (NBC, 8pm). Turk and Carla turn JD’s room into a nursery.
The team pursues a serial killer who changes his appearance in the “Charm and Harm” episode of Criminal Minds (CBS, 8pm).
Scientists explain seven of what they think are the deadliest threats to humanity: black holes, artificial intelligence, supervolcanoes, asteroid strikes, nuclear war, disease, and climate change in a special two-hour “Last Days on Earth” edition of 20/20 (ABC, 8pm – 10pm).
J.D. asks Dr. Cox out for lunch in the “My Lunch” episode of Scrubs (NBC, 8:30pm).
Feasting On Asphalt (Food Network, 9pm and midnight).
Morgan Spurlock spends thirty days in jail in the season finale of 30 Days (FX, 9pm, 10:03pm).
A man is murdered shortly before he was going to take his wife off life support on Law & Order (NBC, 9pm).
Rerun of Hustle (AMC, 9pm, 12:30am). Robert Vaughn is among the stars of this fun series about con artists from the BBC and AMC. Remember that episodes of this show run long (75 minutes).
The investigation starts with the death of a dancer who won the lottery in the “Dancing with the Fishes” episode of CSI: NY (CBS, 9pm).
