News & Notes
I’ve added a list of upcoming season/series premiere dates as I get a lot of questions about this sort of thing. I hope you find it useful.
Since a few of you have inquired about my health and the health of my insane cat posse: I’m hanging in there. Last week and weekend was the week of dizziness and whooshy-ness with a heaping helping of nausea. It wasn’t fun. I’m now off Paxil and my body isn’t happy about it though I’m doing marginally better so far this week. My cat Inky is still recovering from surgery just fine (he’s very much his normal mishievous self), I’ll have him in to the vet on Monday or Tuesday to have his sutures out.
Fall 2006 Schedule Grid Preview.
I’ll be on the radio today not long after 11:40am Central time, as I am most Thursdays; you can listen online or on 107.1 FM in the Twin Cities.
Times listed are for the Central timezone, if you’re in another zone, please adjust accordingly.

Primetime
Baseball: New York Yankees at Detroit Tigers (ESPN, 6pm). Followed by Baseball Tonight (ESPN, 9pm or so). Coverage of the College Softball Tournament is on ESPN2.
Robin Roberts hosts coverage of the 2006 Scripps National Spelling Bee (ABC, 7pm – 9pm). It’s even broadcast in high def, but I’m not sure why one would get excited about that. For earlier spelling action, check out coverage on ESPN (11am – 2pm).
Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell star in Howard Hawks’ take on Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (TCM, 7pm). I absolutely adore this movie and not just for the famous “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” number though that is cool. I love the fashions, I love both Monroe and Russell in this. Some great songs, some fun stuff. This is one of the movies I turn to when I need to cheer up.
Chris gets an “F” and tries to hide it from his parents, his father has the gout and while he stays home from work he rediscovers his love of soap operas on an excellent rerun of Everybody Hates Chris (UPN, 7pm). I really like this show a lot, catch it if it’s “new to you”.
The Office (NBC, 7pm – 9pm) is another rare half-hour comedy that is actually funny. Rarer still because it’s a remake of sorts of a British series and it’s actually good. Some people (like yours truly) find this humor a bit too painfully real, others really enjoy the show.
Lance Bass, Paige Davis, Tim Meadows, and Leslie Nielsen dress up and compete in a Let’s Make A Deal edition of Game Show Marathon (CBS, 7pm). Ricki Lake hosts and I can say with some certainty that she’s no Monty Hall.
Clark loses his powers and has to save his parents and Lana without them on a rerun of Smallville (WB, 7pm). Written by Steven S. DeKnight.
Basketball: Phoenix Suns at Dallas Mavericks (TNT, 7:30pm; pregame at 7pm).
Joey “Hangin’ Tough” McIntyre guest stars on a rerun of Love, Inc. (UPN, 7:30pm). Busy “Kim Kelly” Philipps (of Freaks and Geeks) and Holly Robinson Peete star.
“An unauthorized recording reveals Adolf Hitler as a fraud” on The Secret Voice of Hitler (National Geographic, 8pm and 11pm). Followed by Hitler Uncovered: Color of War (National Geographic, 9pm and midnight) which features “rare color footage” of Hitler and his cronies.
The auditions continue on So You Think You Can Dance (FOX, 8pm). This time they’re in Charlotte, North Carolina.
While I know some people who might like to punch Bobby Flay in the nose, I don’t think that’s what Throwdown with Bobby Flay (Food Network, 8pm and 11pm) is about.
Melinda “Julie Cooper” Clarke guest stars once again as Lady Heather on a rerun of an overhyped episode of CSI (CBS, 8pm). I was disappointed in this one as it wasn’t as creepy and out-there as the promos led you to believe, but mostly because the interplay between Grissom and Lady Heather wasn’t very good or interesting. Dangit.
Robert Picardo (of Star Trek: Voyager and China Beach) and Daphne Maxwell-Reid (of Frank’s Place) guest star on a rerun of Eve (UPN, 8pm).
Kim Manners (of The X-Files) directed the “Dead in the Water” episode of Supernatural (WB, 8pm). A “water spirit” may be responsible for a bunch of drownings that were thought to be suicides.
Diane Sawyer and the ABC News team take a long hard look at the foster care system on Primetime (ABC, 9pm). Additional reports on foster care will air on Good Morning America, World News Tonight, Nightline and 20/20 throughout June 1st, June 2nd, and June 3rd.
How’s this for a cast? Lauren Bacall, Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe, and William Powell star in How To Marry A Millionaire (TCM, 9pm). Marilyn in glasses! An extremely cool apartment. It’s a cute movie.
A therapist is abducted from her office on a rerun of Without A Trace (CBS, 9pm).
John Stamos (of Jake In Progress and Thieves and some other shows) and the ER (NBC, 8:59pm) bunch deal with victims at a plane crash site.
Late Night
Tom Cruise visited The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS, 10:35pm) a month ago, this is a rerun of that episode. Did he jump on the furniture and say insane things about mental illness? Tune in if you care to find out (I didn’t the first time and won’t be this time; I’m kindof boycotting Tom Cruise. Not that this likely matters at all). Jamie Oliver is the other guest.
Barbara Stanwyck and Marilyn Monroe star in Clash By Night (TCM, 11pm). Directed by Fritz Lang. Um. I can’t believe I’ve never seen this, I thought I’d see all of Marilyn’s movies (and I also really like Stanwyck). I’ll be Tivo-ing this, that’s for sure.
Cary Grant, Ginger Rogers, and Marilyn Monroe star in Monkey Business (TCM, 1am). A very silly film. Not great, but it makes me laugh anyway. Watching Grant and Rogers revert to behaving like kids or teens is entertaining primarily because they’re both such fine actors and so good at physical comedy. Marilyn isn’t in this all that much, it’s a Grant & Rogers flick, not a Marilyn Monroe movie.
All the late night talk shows are in reruns this week.
Check out Sue Trowbridge’s Late Night TV Page to see who the scheduled guests are for the various late night talk shows (and some daytime ones, too).
