Head Cases has already been cancelled by FOX after just two airings, in case you were looking for it tonight.

Featured Pick:

Season premiere of Veronica Mars (UPN, 8pm).

I’ve been disappointed with most of the new fall shows in large part because last season spoiled me. Last season brought us Veronica Mars, Lost, and House– three of my favorite shows. None of the new shows are that good or at least they aren’t yet.

For many of my friends, the two most anticipated premieres of the new fall season have been the season premieres of Veronica Mars and Lost– surely a sign that those shows did something right during their first seasons.

If you read this site last season, I hope you took my advice and watched season 1 of Veronica Mars as it was one of the best shows last year. I’m proud that I picked it as my favorite new show from the very beginning, because the rest of the season didn’t let me down. [Season 1 is due out on DVD on October 11th.]

If you watched Veronica Mars last season, you’ll want to watch it this season. You’ve got to tune in tonight to see the major changes in Neptune since you last saw the town. Rob Thomas and company have done an amazing job with the season premiere as it really does kick off the show in a slightly different direction and it launches new mysteries and . . . well, it’s juicy stuff. Fascinating. I’m impressed.

If you haven’t been watching Veronica Mars, this episode is a good place to start– though it does give away some of the big mysteries of season 1 which would make that season less enjoyable for you. You might want to record the episode and then wait to watch it ’til you’ve had a chance to watch season 1, but that’s really your call.

I have seen a rough cut of the season premiere and I really liked it. I’m not going to tell you who is at the door (though you will find out), I’m not going to tell you the new mystery or how things sit in Neptune. You want to remain unspoiled for this show as much as possible as it is a well-crafted mystery series.

Tune in tonight to see what Veronica Mars, her Dad, Wallace, and the rest of the gang have been up to since the events of last season’s finale. It’s good stuff.

The season premiere of Veronica Mars airs tonight at 8pm on UPN. The episode will be rerun in most markets on your local UPN affiliate some time this coming weekend.

Primetime:

Baseball: Toronto Blue Jays at Boston Red Sox (ESPN, 6pm).

ABC has pushed back the premieres of George Lopez and Freddie yet again, this time in order to rebroadcast the season premiere of Lost (ABC, 7pm). It’s a good deal in case you missed it. Here in Minneapolis, half the show aired on another station and then the second half was back on the station where it usually airs and the whole episode was squished due to weather alerts all over the screen. So getting a chance to see the episode full-screen without any oddities would be novel.

The models receive plans for makeovers on a new episode of America’s Next Top Model (UPN, 7pm; airs again on Tuesday).

The competitors on The Apprentice: Martha Stewart (NBC, 7pm) open flower shops in New York City.

Season premiere of Veronica Mars (UPN, 8pm). See my “featured pick” above.

New episode of Lost (ABC, 8pm). In the season finale, we didn’t spend any time with the folks on the raft; in this episode, we will see how the raft guys are doing (and maybe where Walt is?). Plus more action “down the hatch.”

Criminal Minds (CBS, 8pm) moves to its regular timeslot. Mandy Patinkin, Thomas Gibson, and Shemar Moore are profilers, more or less. In tonight’s new episode, they try to get inside the head of an arsonist in order to put him behind bars, despite a lack of physical evidence. Lukas Haas is among the guest stars. I wish this show weren’t up against Veronica Mars and Lost, because I do love me some Mandy Patinkin. I thought the first episode was decent enough as these things go.

Andrew McCarthy, Kerr Smith, and Kelly Rutherford guest star on a new episode of E-Ring (NBC, 8pm). Benjamin Bratt and Dennis Hopper star in this series set at the Pentagon. Not great, possibly decent, but in a killer timeslot where it’s got steep competition. USA did rebroadcast the first episode, but as of this writing, a second airing of this episode on USA is not scheduled; it still could happen and I’ll let you know if it does.

New episode of Over There (FX, 9pm, 10:01pm, midnight, 1:01am). DVR/VCR Alert: episode runs 61 minutes. Angel puts himself on the line in a hostage situation. You’re watching this, aren’t you?

Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Finn (Ice-T) cross over from Law & Order: SVU to Law & Order (NBC, 9pm). Lynda Carter and Estella Warren are guest stars (as they were on last night’s SVU). This is part 2 of a 2-part crossover with Law & Order: SVU that started last night.

An Air Force officer is found barely alive and with wounds similar to someone or other on a new episode of Invasion (ABC, 9pm). Cirroc Lofton (of Deep Space Nine) and Veronica Cartwright are among the guest stars. William Fichtner and Eddie Cibrian star. This is the alien invasion show that started out in a hurricane, in case you’re having trouble keeping track. Shaun Cassidy is an exec producer; Thomas Schlamme is a consultant (and directed the pilot).

In yet another effort to lighten and brighten CSI: NY (CBS, 9pm), the team has new offices in a fancy highrise on the season premiere. And coroner Hawkes (Hill Harper) asks to work in the field, which is definitely a good thing since Hill Harper is great (and has been underused on the show). I still haven’t warmed to any of the CSI spinoffs, I prefer classic CSI by far, despite liking some castmembers of the spinoffs. Maybe this season will be better for CSI: NY than last season.

Baseball: Angels at Oakland A’s (ESPN, 9pm).

Baseball: San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres (ESPN2, 9pm).

Tomorrow / Thursday:

I’ll tell you what I think of the season premieres of Everwood and Smallville, and of the series premiere of Night Stalker, plus I’ll cover the rest of the new primetime stuff too.

Series premiere of Night Stalker.

Season premieres of Alias, Everwood, Smallville, Without A Trace, and Will & Grace.

New episodes of CSI, Cuts, ER, Eve, Everybody Hates Chris, Joey, Love Inc, The OC, Reunion, Survivor, and more.
