Primetime:

Baseball: Minnesota Twins at New York Yankees (FOX, 7pm). Game 1 of this American League Division Series. Cy Young favorite Johan Santana pitches for the Twins, Mike Mussina for the Yankees.

The fine folks of Stars Hollow learn that Luke and Lorelai are seeing each other on tonight’s new episode of Gilmore Girls (WB, 7pm). And Rory goes back to school, so we finally get to see Paris (the person, that is).

Mark Harmon & company investigate when a decomposed body of a woman in a wedding dress is found in a subterranean cell decorated to resemble a 1950s bedroom on NCIS (CBS, 7pm).

Most of the networks and many cable stations have coverage of the Vice Presidential Debate which is set to start around 8pm. Some coverage starts earlier, of course.

Premiere of Tanner on Tanner (Sundance, 8pm and 11:30pm). Part 1 of 4. A new look back at the Tanner ‘88 series. Michael Murphy returns as Tanner, Cynthia Nixon as his daughter. The set up is that the daughter is making a film about failed presidential candidates. From Robert Altman and Garry Trudeau. With guest appearances by all sorts of people.

Beautiful Dreamer: Brian Wilson and the Story of Smile (Showtime, 8pm). The film follows Brian Wilson as he finishes an album he started in 1967.

Don’t worry, UPN has pulled the previously scheduled new episode of Veronica Mars (UPN, 8pm) for a rerun of last week’s episode (where Weevil goes to jail for credit card fraud). ‘Cuz odds are the show may be preempted in your area for Debate coverage anyway. This episode also airs at 6pm on MTV.

Even though Nathan and Haley are already married, they are thrown bachelor and bachelorette parties on One Tree Hill (WB, 8pm; airs again on Thursday). Which seems like a terrible idea, doesn’t it?

PAX airs the series premiere of Cold Turkey (PAX, 8pm) again and the season premiere of Doc (PAX, 9pm).

Joan Rivers guest stars on the season finale of Nip/Tuck (FX, 9pm, 10pm). Sean and Christian learn “the shocking truth about Ava!”

Series premiere of Wanda Does It (Comedy Central, 9:30pm). Wanda Sykes learns about different jobs in this new series. Tonight: she gets to learn about how to repo cars.

Rerun of the latest episode of The Wire (HBO, 10pm).

Rerun of the most recent episode of Rescue Me (FX, 10pm).
