Season premiere of History Detectives (PBS, check your local listings). I’d heard great things about this show, but never managed to check it out until now. I’ve seen the season premiere which airs tonight and it’s great fun. I love the use of music, from the theme song (Elvis Costello’s “Watching the Detectives”) to incidental music (like “Under Ice” by Kate Bush). The cases are fascinating and are told in a way that kept my interest. Excellent pacing, good use of split screen. The “detectives” themselves are personable, too. Tonight’s cases involve what may be a Civil War era submarine, a peace pipe that may have belonged to Chief Red Cloud, and concrete homes that may have been built by Thomas Edison. Cool stuff.
Pride (A&E, 7pm, 9pm, 11pm, 1am) is a new A&E original movie that follows two lion cubs (who aren’t far from adulthood) and the pride of lions they’re with. Live action, so there are lots of great pictures of lions. Features voice acting by Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren, Robbie Coltrane, Jim Broadbent, Sean Bean, Rupert Graves, Kwame Kwei-Armah, Martin Freeman, and John Hurt.
Amanda Righetti (who plays Hailey on The O.C.) joins the cast of The North Shore (FOX, 7pm; also airs on Thursday at 7pm). She plays someone who is down on her luck and then works to get hired by the hotel. Plus two characters “succumb to their undeniable chemistry.” Um, yeah. Already? Brooke Burns, Kristoffer Polaha, and James Remar star. I miss The O.C. and really wish this show were better. I’ll keep watching for a couple more episodes in case it improves.
Part 2 (of 2) of Salem’s Lot (TNT, 7pm, 9pm). Adaptation of the Stephen King novel. Rob Lowe stars, with Donald Sutherland, James Cromwell, Andre Braugher, Samantha Mathis, and Rutger Hauer.
Biker House on Monster House (Discovery, 7pm and 10pm).
Baseball: Cleveland Indians at Chicago White Sox (ESPN, 7pm).
The Color Purple (TCM, 7pm).
Anatomy of a Scene: Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Sundance, 7:30pm).
Jerry Van Dyke guest stars on Yes, Dear (CBS, 7:30pm).
2004 AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Meryl Streep (USA, 8pm – 10pm; 10pm – midnight). Mike Nichols presents the awards; among those who pay tribute to Ms. Streep: Kevin Kline, Nora Ephron, Goldie Hawn, Robert Redford, Sydney Pollack, and Claire Danes. This was filmed on June 10th at the Kodak theater in Hollywood.
A high roller (or “whale”) arrives at the Golden Nugget, this episode also follows some “sexy swingers” on The Casino (FOX, 8pm). New unscripted (reality) series from Mark Burnett which follows two rich dotcom guys as they try to put an old Vegas casino back on the map.
Rerun of the very funny season finale of Everybody Loves Raymond (CBS, 8pm) where Ray and Robert decide to golf for who gets to take care of their Mom after their Dad dies.
Rerun of last week’s Summerland (WB, 8pm). I guess the third airing may be on Mondays now, not Sundays (as it was for the first couple episodes). Ava finds a joint in her nephew’s backpack (not jeans as previously reported); one of the guys has a hard time making time for one of the kids as promised. Family drama fluff, but with an unconventional family.
“Why We Fight” episode of Band of Brothers (History, 8pm and midnight).
Picnic and “On The Side” Unwrapped (Food Network, 8pm and midnight; 8:30pm and 12:30am).
Our House: A Very Real Documentary About Kids of Gay and Lesbian Parents (Sundance, 8pm).
Part 1 of a 2-part Two and a Half Men (CBS, 8:30pm) with guest star Jenna Elfman (of Dharma & Greg).
The Dad this time around has three grown daughters on the season premiere of Who Wants To Marry My Dad? (NBC, 9pm). There’ll be six episodes.
Last week ABC gave the first installment of their Weddings (ABC, 9pm) series some crazy long name, now they’re just simply calling it Weddings. In the second episode, “a couple hold their ceremony at the former plantation where the groom’s ancestors were slaves.”
Rerun of the season finale of CSI: Miami (CBS, 9pm). Mike Erwin (of Everwood) and Jennifer Sky (of Cleopatra 2525) guest star.
Music video fans think they’re really helping make a music video on Faking the Video (MTV, 9:30pm). Of course it’s a put-on.
Stephen F. Hayes on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (Comedy Central, 10pm and midnight).
Sarah Silverman, Laura Kightlinger, Greg Giraldo, Nick DiPaolo on Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn (Comedy Central, 10:30pm and 12:30am).
Larry Brown (coach of the Detroit Pistons), Sean Hayes, Phish (performs on the Late Show marquee) on The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS, 10:35pm).
Keira Knightley, Dan Abrams, Avril Lavigne on The Tonight Show (NBC, 10:35pm).
The Rock, Colin Quinn, the Sleepy Jackson on a rerun of Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NBC, 11:35pm).
Alfred Molina, Los Lonely Boys on Jimmy Kimmel Live (ABC, check your local listings).
Kyle MacLachlan, Lori Loughlin (of Summerland), Morris Day on The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn (CBS, check your local listings).
Lindsay Lohan, Claire Forlani, Iron and Wine on Last Call with Carson Daly (NBC, check your local listings).
“Touched” and “End of Days” episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (FX, 6am, 7am).
A celebration of the 10th Anniversary of Today’s street side studio (all week), photographing children on Today (NBC, 7am – 10am).
Ashley Judd on Good Morning, America (ABC, 7am – 9am).
Summer books for kids, Lora Brody on The Early Show (CBS, 7am – 9am).
A performance from Wonderful Town, Ashley Judd, Marlon Wayans on Live with Regis and Kelly (syndicated, check your local listings).
Sid Caesar, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Diana Ross, and Peter Sellers on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh In (Trio, 9am).
Queen Latifah, Diana DeGarmo (of American Idol), viewer makeovers on The View (ABC, check your local listings).
Sci-Fi mini-marathon du jour: The X-Files (Sci-Fi, 10am – 3pm).
James Spader, Sherri Shepherd (of Less Than Perfect) on a very funny rerun of The Ellen DeGeneres Show (syndicated, check your local listings).
Mark-Paul Gosselaar (of NYPD Blue), Martin Spanjers, Ashley Scott, Musiq on a rerun of The Sharon Osbourne Show (syndicated, check your local listings).
Christine Baranski, Stephen Dorff, Andrew Krasny on The Wayne Brady Show (syndicated, check your local listings).
“Meet the Newest Dr. Phil Family” on Dr. Phil (syndicated, check your local listings).
New! Oprah interviews Bill Clinton and goes inside his home on Oprah (syndicated, check your local listings).
Part 1 of the 2-part pilot of The Incredible Hulk (Sci-Fi, 3pm).
“Chosen” and “Welcome to the Hellmouth” episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (FX, 3pm, 4pm). That’s the series finale and the series premiere. If you haven’t seen the show from the very beginning, it really is a fun show and worth your time. Reruns air at 3pm & 4pm (usually) on weekdays; and are rerun the following morning at 6am and 7am. When the show is good, it’s really darn good. Seasons 2 & 3 are my favorites, but season 1 is important set up for what is to come (and is pretty fun at times, too).
“Darla” episode of Angel (TNT, 4pm).
“Posse Comitatus” episode of The West Wing (Bravo, 6pm and 10pm).
“Artichokes: The Choke Is on You” episode of Good Eats (Food Network, 6pm).
Quick Snax Unwrapped (Food Network, 6:30pm).
In primetime Tuesday expect: season premiere of Nip/Tuck, series premiere of Outback Jack, premiere of NYPD 24/7; new episodes of The Jury, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, The Joe Schmo Show, The Bernie Mac Show, Summerland, Big, The Next Action Star, and Last Comic Standing. Premiere of the special AFI’s 100 Years . . . 100 Songs . Cary Grant movies on TCM. In other words: lots of stuff! Full coverage of all this and more in my picks for Tuesday, which should be online by or around Noon Tuesday.
