thursday

Just a reminder that I cover Friday daytime stuff in the tomorrow section of these picks for Thursday.

Best Bets:

Janet Jackson, David Arquette on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (syndicated, check your local listings)
Friends (NBC, 7pm)
Scrubs (NBC, 8:30pm)
Denzel Washington, Janeane Garofalo, Mario Winans on The Tonight Show (NBC, 10:35pm)

News:

FOX has picked up The O.C., 24, The Bernie Mac Show, and Malcolm in the Middle for next season. They’ve also made a deal to keep Mad TV around for three more seasons. Still no word on the fate of Arrested Development (dangit).

Here’s a first look at CSI: New York. Pictures and stories from the set of an episode of CSI: Miami that introduces at least some of the CSI: New York cast (including Gary Sinise and Melina Kanakaredes).

I’m struggling a little bit to get back into my old routine (or even a shiny new one!) after my Easter vacation. Thanks for hanging in there (er, here), y’all.

Lots of great TV this week. I loved Angel last night. All hail writer Ultimate Drew, director Terrence O’Hara, and the often underestimated and underappreciated actors of Angel. Gilmore Girls was pretty great this week, too. And The O.C. was fun (as ever). And I’ve still got a bunch of potentially good stuff on my Tivo I’ve yet to watch. Wouldn’t dream of leaving my TV off this week.

Daytime:

Sci-Fi mini-marathon du jour: The Outer Limits (Sci-Fi, 10am – 3pm).

Baseball: Florida Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies (ESPN, Noon).

Baseball: Atlanta Braves at Cincinnati Reds (TBS, Noon).

Janet Jackson, David Arquette on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (syndicated, check your local listings).

Tyler Florence, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Lisaraye on The Sharon Osbourne Show (syndicated, check your local listings; WGN, midnight).

William Shatner, Amy Davidson, Rebecca Corry, JC Chasez & Tony Lucca on The Wayne Brady Show (syndicated, check your local listings).

“A Family in Crisis: Still Fighting” on Dr. Phil (syndicated, check your local listings).

“Oprah Producers’ Favorite Moments” on Oprah (syndicated, check your local listings).

“Superstar” and “Where The Wild Things Are” episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (FX, 3pm, 4pm).

“Long Day’s Journey” episode of Angel (TNT, 4pm).

“The War At Home” episode of The West Wing (Bravo, 6pm and 10pm).

Another episode of Ned and Stacey (We, 6pm and 12:30am) that never aired on FOX. I liked Debra Messing better on this show than I do on Will & Grace, I just can’t help it.

“Crust Never Sleeps” (pie crust) episode of Good Eats (Food Network, 6pm).

Chocolate Covered Unwrapped (Food Network, 6:30pm).

Show
Penn & Teller BS! Penn & Teller BS! (Rerun)
Primetime:

ESPN & ESPN2 have NHL playoff action. TNT has more NBA playoff games.

VH1 is airing a bunch of installments of I Love The ’80s just in case you can’t get enough of that (or can’t look away if you flip past it).

Expect lots of life changes and the usual hijinks on one of the last episodes of Friends (NBC, 7pm, runs long). Only two more episodes after this. Is followed by a rerun of “The One Where Chandler Gets Caught” (with a realtor, that is) (NBC, 7:32pm).

A body turns up at the morgue that has the same name as Tru’s neighbor and Tru suspects her neighbor may have been the victim of identity theft and things get a bit confusing on Tru Calling (FOX, 7pm). Plus Tru and Davis try to find out more about Jack (Jason Priestley).

More of Survivor: All-Stars (CBS, 7pm). It’s not over yet.

Baseball : New York Yankees at Chicago White Sox (WGN, 7pm).

“Michael literally talks Theo through his first move on an attractive doctor” in the “Fire and Ice” episode of Now and Again (Trio, 7pm and 10pm). Dennis Haysbert (of 24) & Eric Close (of Without A Trace) star.

Looking for something to watch after the new episode of Friends? You could try Like Family (WB, 7:30pm). It’s not long for the world, but I’ve kinda liked the handful of episodes I’ve seen. Not a great show (a la Scrubs or Arrested Development), but a likeable old-fashioned sitcom. And Diane Farr (of The Job) is a castmember, both she and Holly Robinson Peete are darn likeable.

Jack turns to Will for help in writing his commencement address (Jack’s graduating from nursing school) on Will & Grace (NBC, 8pm). And yes, Will overthinks everything.

An electrocution leads to a heist of Japanese antiquities and Gilbert & Sullivan musicals are referenced on a pretty-good rerun of C.S.I. (CBS, 8pm). And there’s also a storyline about some “real” vampires (well, teens who drink blood).

An attorney who needs a heart transplant really probably shouldn’t have decided to have the procedure done at Stephen King’s Kingdom Hospital (ABC, 8pm). I mean, wouldn’t the name be a giveaway? Oh, um. Yeah. And some very old newspaper clippings are found inside a doll and are about an 1868 fire where “scores of children” died “on the very ground where the hospital now stands.” This particular episode wasn’t written by Stephen King, by the way.

Jamie Kennedy is in Chicago, first pretending to be a blues legend and then in the second episode he has Mike Ditka in on some prank on The Jamie Kennedy Experiment (WB, 8pm, 8:30pm).

J.D. and Danni (Tara Reid) break up again, J.D. decides to make a play for Elliott again Turk and Carla get nervous about something having to do with their upcoming wedding again and this episode just really sounds very familiar, but I assure you it’s a new episode of Scrubs (NBC, 8:30pm) and probably better than it sounds. Scott Foley, Tara Reid, and Richard Kind all guest star (again).

Chris Rock: Never Scared (HBO, 8:30pm).

Dr. Pratt is accused of sexual harassment and it sounds like there’s a whole lot of personal drama for most of the characters of ER (NBC, 8:59pm). I suppose there must be some actual medical cases, too.

Lisa Edelstein and Eric Lutes guest star on a rerun of Without A Trace (CBS, 9pm). Good episode, Lisa Edelstein is fabulous (as always).

“Parents learn their three babies are autistic and spend their savings for a cutting-edge treatment” on Primetime Thursday (ABC, 9pm).

“Real police detectives, federal agents and private investigators rate their on-screen counterparts” in Just The Facts (Court TV, 9pm and 1am). Part 1 of 2. I don’t know anything else about this, but it could be cool.

“Backyard engineers reinvent the electric car” on Sucking Amps (Discovery, 9pm).

“Chode gets involved with politicians while visiting ‘the spring break planet’ ” on Tripping The Rift (Sci-Fi, 9:30pm and 11pm).

Late Night:

Zap Brannigan gets a job at Planet Express on Futurama (Cartoon Network, 10pm and 1am).

“Security Door” episode of NewsRadio (Biography, 10pm and 2am).

Arianna Huffington on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (Comedy Central, 10pm and midnight).

Janet Jackson, John Mayer on a rerun of The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS, 10:35pm).

Denzel Washington, Janeane Garofalo, Mario Winans on The Tonight Show (NBC, 10:35pm).

Samuel L. Jackson, James Carville, Van Hunt on a rerun of Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NBC, 11:35pm).

Camryn Manheim (of The Practice), Victor Varnado on Jimmy Kimmel Live (ABC, check your local listings).

Randy Jackson, Neal McDonough (of Boomtown, Walking Tall), Van Hunt on a rerun of The Late Late Show (CBS, check your local listings).

Ben McKenzie (of The O.C.), Max Kellerman, Blondie on Last Call with Carson Daly (NBC, check your local listings).

Richard Belzer turns up as Detective John Munch in “The Unusual Suspects” episode of The X-Files (Sci-Fi, 1am). It’s the episode that tells the story of how the Lone Gunmen first met Fox Mulder. Lovely episode. Signy Coleman also guest stars. Not to be confused with the terrible episode “Shapes” that airs on TNT at 1am or thereabouts (depending on when the basketball games end).

Tomorrow:

“Superstar” and “Where The Wild Things Are” episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (FX, 6am, 7am).

Lindsay Lohan, Sheryl Crow on Today (NBC, 7am – 10am).

Chefs Wolfgang Puck and Masaharu Morimoto face off on Good Morning, America (ABC, 7am – 9am).

Denzel Washington, latest Survivor castoff on The Early Show (CBS, 7am – 9am).

Cal Ripken Jr., Lindsay Lohan, an Iron Chef battle on Live with Regis and Kelly (syndicated, check your local listings).

SpyGirl Alert! Jennifer Garner (of Alias) on The View (ABC, check your local listings).

Sci-Fi mini-marathon du jour: Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (Sci-Fi, 10am – 3pm).

David Bowie, Tina Fey on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (syndicated, check your local listings).

Kathy Griffin, Brian Krause, Simone Denny, classmates from High School Reunion on The Sharon Osbourne Show (syndicated, check your local listings).

M.A.N.T.I.S. Alert! Amanda Bynes, Carl Lumbly (of Alias), Jessalyn Gilsig, Herbert Hudson on The Wayne Brady Show (syndicated, check your local listings).

“Staff Asks Dr. Phil and Robin” on Dr. Phil (syndicated, check your local listings).

“The Worst Day of Your Life” (people who survived tragedy) on Oprah (syndicated, check your local listings).

Baseball: New York Mets at Chicago Cubs (WGN, 2pm).

“New Moon Rising” and “The Yoko Factor” episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (FX, 3pm, 4pm).

“Awakening” episode of Angel (TNT, 4pm).

TV Land Moguls: The ’50s (TV Land, 4pm).

In primetime on Friday expect a new episode of Third Watch, new episode of Touching Evil, the first installment of Iron Chef America (with comments by Alton Brown and a cool panel of celebrity judges) wherein Bobby Flay faces off against an Iron Chef, part two of Just The Facts, some identical twins are made over on What Not To Wear, NBA and NHL playoff action, and really otherwise mostly just a bunch of reruns. I’ll cover a lot more in my picks for Friday, which I hope to have online by Noon Friday.
