super sunday

Updated by Laurel Krahn on February 1st, 2004 Permalink

I just updated the tomorrow section with picks for Monday daytime and other info like that.

Best Bets:

The Super Bowl (CBS, 5pm)
Season premiere of Survivor: All Stars (CBS, after the Super Bowl)

News:

Teevee.org has a good long list of alternatives to watching the Super Bowl on their website, plus they’ll have a sure-to-be-super Super Bowl weblog on their site updated throughout the day (and game).

Some alternatives to ye olde Super Bowl & Survivor are listed below (when all else fails, rent a movie or watch some good TV on DVD). HBO & Showtime have new episodes of their Sunday night series, otherwise everything else is a rerun or marathon or movie (more or less).

ABC lied to us, they’re cancelling Karen Sisco after all. Argh. Three episodes have been completed that haven’t yet aired, will let you know if they ever turn up on ABC and/or USA (or elsewhere). Yes, this is crummy news. Sorry.

The Sharon Osbourne Show has been canceled. Huh. Ellen’s show is way better, but Sharon’s show has had some good moments. I’m a bit surprised.

Both American Dreams and Las Vegas will return to NBC next season. UPN has picked up America’s Next Top Model for a couple more seasons or whatever you wanna call each edition of the show. Showtime has already picked up The L Word for another season.

Daytime:

ESPN2 airs nothing but Super Bowl Highlights ’til 5pm.

Super Bowl specials start early on CBS.

Parking Lot marathon all day (and evening). It’s all about various fandoms.

WGN airs a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air marathon (WGN, 10am – ) and ABC Family airs a Full House marathon.

ESPN Classic airs a marathon of episodes of their excellent Sports Century series today.

Sunday NFL Countdown (ESPN, 10am – 1pm).

Queer Eye for the Straight Guy marathon (Bravo, 11am – ).

Cops marathon (FX, starting at 11am).

Super Bowl Today (CBS, 1pm – 5pm).

NBA Basketball: Philadelphia 76ers at Minnesota Timberwolves (ESPN, 1pm).

Paula’s Home Cooking marathon (Food Network, 1pm – 7pm).

TNT airs a Charmed marathon.

World Poker Tour (NBC, 3pm). From Las Vegas.

Rerun of One Tree Hill (WB, 4pm) from earlier in the week. People keep telling me this show has improved a lot since early episodes, but I’m still dubious.

The Homes That Made Hollywood: The ’50s (HGTV, 4pm).

Back to back episodes of What Not To Wear marathon (TLC, 4pm, 5pm).

NFL Football : Super Bowl XXXVIII: Carolina Panthers vs. New England Patriots (CBS, 5pm).

There’s a bullimic wrestler (played by Gregory “Ephram” Smith’s real life brother) and other storylines involving the Abbott and Brown families on a rerun of Everwood (WB, 5pm) from last Monday. I still love this show, but have found the last couple of episodes lacking in . . . something. Hope the magic returns tomorrow. Maybe the episodes haven’t has as much humor? I dunno. Still one of the best series on the air, though.

Film essential: Psycho (TCM, 5pm).

HGTV’s Dream Home 2004 (HGTV, 5pm).

Dance and pairs short programs. Figure Skating : State Farm U.S. Championships (ESPN, 5pm).

Primetime:

Super Bowl continues on CBS (CBS, 5pm – whenever coverage ends).

Check out the schedule grid to see what else is on the networks.

Back to back episodes of Trading Spaces: Family (TLC, 6pm and 10pm, 7pm and 11pm) followed by back to back episodes of Trading Spaces (TLC, 8pm and midnight, 9pm and 1am).

“A Toast to the Ladies” and “Ladies Night” episodes of Emeril Live (Food Network, 7pm and 11pm, 8pm and midnight).

Duck Dodgers (Cartoon Network, 7pm).

Original version of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (TCM, 7pm, letterboxed).

Ladies and mens short programs. Figure Skating : State Farm U.S. Championships (ESPN, 7pm).

Marathon of Gay Weddings (Bravo, 7pm – 11pm).

Forensic Files marathon (Court TV, 7pm – ).

A&E turns to Murder, She Wrote episodes and movies this evening.

New episode of Sex and the City (HBO, 8pm).

World Poker Tour: Ladies’ Night (Travel, 8pm and 11pm).

New episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO, 8:30pm).

Season premiere of Survivor: All-Stars (CBS, starts after Super Bowl coverage, don’t know when that’ll be exactly). I’ve seen the first half hour of the episode and lemme tell ya: it’s intense. These folks who were on Survivor previously are given the least amount of supplies to work with thus far, I was kinda amazed by how little they got. There are three tribes. Players for this “all-star” edition include all previous winners as well as some fan faves and others that I’m sure they thought would be especially entertaining. The Red team consists of Amber Brkich, Tom Buchanan, Alicia Calaway, Rob Cesternino, Sue Hawk, and Rob Mariano. Yellow team is: Rudy Boesch, Rupert Boneham, Jenna Lewis, Jerri Manthey, Tina Wesson, and Ethan Zohn. Green team is: Colby Donaldson, Richard Hatch, Shii Ann Huang, Jenna Morasca, Lex van den Berghe, and Kathy Vavrick-O?Brien. Yes, Richard Hatch is still quite the obnoxious character. More details can be found on the official website.

First two episodes of this season of Chappelle’s Show (Comedy Central, 9pm and 11:30pm, 9:30pm and midnight).

New episode of The L Word (Showtime, 9pm).

John Wayne in She Wore A Yellow Ribbon (TCM, 9:30pm).

Late Night:

First episode of the second season of The Shield (FX, 10pm). Great stuff. Though this episode is intense and I found it hard to watch.

Farscape (Sci-Fi, 10pm).

Crossroads : Martina McBride and Pat Benatar (CMTV, 10pm).

No new episodes on Adult Swim tonight, but that doesn’t mean you might not enjoy watching the Cartoon Network anyway. Just saying.

Another airing of the “Sticky Fingers” episode of Keen Eddie (Bravo, midnight). Episode premiered on Bravo (it’d never aired on FOX) last week.

Tomorrow:

Kelsey Grammer (re the end of Frasier), Arthur Kornhaber (re team parenting) on Today (NBC, 7am – 10am).

Super Bowl commercials, Ty Pennington (of Trading Spaces, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and author of the book Ty’s Tricks), the kick-off of the weeklong series “Cut the Carbs and Loose the Weight” with chef Marcus Samuelson (of Aquavit) on Good Morning, America (ABC, 7am – 9am).

First castoff from Survivor: All-Stars, Super Bowl wrap on The Early Show (CBS, 7am – 9am).

Ty Pennington (of Trading Spaces et al), Tracy Morgan (of The Tracy Morgan Show), meet the couple that will be married on the show later this week on Live with Regis and Kelly (syndicated, check your local listings).

Randy Jackson (of American Idol, author of What’s Up Dawg?: How to Become a Superstar in the Music Business), journalist/author Richard M. Cohen (husband of Meredith Vieira, author of Blindsided: Lifting a Life Above Illness: A Reluctant Memoir) on The View (ABC, check your local listings).

Sci-Fi mini-marathon du jour: Amazing Stories (Sci-Fi, 10am – 3pm).

Tim Conway & Barbara Feldon on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh In (Trio, Noon).

Another airing of the Rock n’ Jock Superbowl 2004 (MTV, 1pm).

David Bowie: Glass Spider Tour (Trio, 2pm).

Amy Brenneman, Kathy Najimy, a game of Celebrity (with Ellen and Kathy and audience members), Leann Rimes preforms “With This Love” (from her Greatest Hits CD) on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (syndicated, check your local listings).

Teen actress Alexis Dziena (of the Lifetime movie She’s Too Young) discusses the consequences of teen promiscuity, there’s also a discussion of the issue with a bunch of teens and parents, plus Sharon answers questions from the audience about how she handles the issue with her kids. On The Sharon Osbourne Show (syndicated, check your local listings).

John Stossel, Dat Phan, Josh Turner (performs a song from his CD Long Black Train), Joshua Morrow (of The Young and the Restless), Marjorie Johnson on The Wayne Brady Show (syndicated, check your local listings).

“Thomas, the Bachelor!” on Dr. Phil (syndicated, check your local listings). A couple of people who’ve lost weight with Dr. Phil return to “the dating scene.”

“The World’s Best Advice” on Oprah (syndicated, check your local listings).

“Doublemeat Palace” and “Dead Things” episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (FX, 3pm, 4pm).

“Eternity” episode of Angel (TNT, 4pm).

“The Long Goodbye” episode of The West Wing (Bravo, 6pm and 10pm). This was the big C.J.-centric atypical episode.

New episodes of most things in primetime including Everwood, Everbody Loves Raymond, Two and a Half Men, C.S.I. Miami, 7th Heaven, and Las Vegas. More on the primetime and late night stuff in tomorrow’s picks (of course).
