Primetime:

Season premiere of Gilmore Girls (WB, 7pm). Loralai and Rory return from their summer backpacking across Europe. Rory’s off to Yale, Sookie’s even more pregnant, and Luke returns from his cruise with some big news. Lorelai and Rory also start going to Friday night dinners with Emily and Richard again, of course. I’ve raved so much about this show over the years and I’ll keep on raving until the show declines in quality. So far it’s still my favorite show on the air. Witty and warm and even sometimes wise. Not just for girls, either, of course. Best dialogue around, best quirky small town, best mother-daughter relationships . . . it’s just the best. I’m thrilled it’s back with new episodes! Yay!

Series premiere of Navy NCIS (CBS, 7pm). Mark Harmon stars in this cross between JAG and C.S.I. David McCallum (of Man from U.N.C.L.E.), Michael Weatherly (of Dark Angel), Sasha Alexander (of Presidio Med), and Pauley Perrette (of Special Unit 2, Time Of Your Life) co-star. Could certainly be a good second-tier show (you know: the ones you watch from time to time, but that you don’t tape when you aren’t home). Good cast and premise makes it a cut above lots of the shows debuting this season.

Season premiere of 8 Simple Rules . . . (ABC, 7pm). One of the three episodes filmed before John Ritter’s untimely death. Will air with a special introduction by the cast. In case you haven’t heard, ABC plans to keep this show on the air. Will air a “special episode” where the character’s deal with the death of the character played by John Ritter. And then the show will be retooled and will go on. Risky. I always felt the only reason to watch the show was Ritter.

A ferret bites Whoopi (NBC, 7pm).

Series premiere of I’m With Her (ABC, 7:30pm). Loosely based on the romance between Brooke Shields and her non-celebrity husband. A school teacher played by David Sutcliffe (Christopher from Gilmore Girls) becomes romantically involved with a movie star played by Teri Polo (Rebecca from Sports Night, among other roles). TV Guide says it’s “all situation with very little comedy.” Eep.

Mom and Dad throw a dinner party for daughter Sara and some prospective suitors, but of course things don’t go well on Happy Family (NBC, 7:30pm).

Series premiere of One Tree Hill (WB, 8pm). Chad Michael Murray (he played Tristan on Gilmore Girls) and James Lafferty star as teens who live in the same small town and find out they’re half brothers. One is rich, the other poor; they both play basketball and neither knows the other exists at first I think. Sounds like the first few episodes are about bringing the two guys together (which if you already know how they’re related from the press materials, may get boring). Hilarie Burton, Barry Corbin, Paul Johansson, Craig Sheffer, and Moira Kelly co-star.

Does Roz want Frasier? Do Niles and Daphne want a baby? And can they conceive? And so on. If anyone still cares. On the season premiere of Frasier (NBC, 8pm). Back to back new episodes that go together from the sound of things.

Season premiere of The Guardian (CBS, 8pm). Nick represents a kid who lives with a traveling circus. Lulu (Wendy Moniz) seems set on moving away, so I’m sure he’ll try to convince her to stay.

There’s a huge robbery at a London bank and it’s up to MI-5 (A&E, 8pm and midnight) to find the money and solve the crime.

Season premiere of Less Than Perfect (ABC, 8:30pm). Will Claude keep working for Will Butler (Eric Roberts) or will she work for the new executive played by Michael Boatman? Gosh, they’ve gone and added another good actor to the mix at least temporarily. Andy Dick and Andrea Parker are already enough to make me recommend this show. One of the better sitcoms on the air.

Stepdad goes on his first ever family vacation with all of The Mullets (UPN, 8:30pm). Oh-oh.

An expectant mother is abducted during a carjacking on the season premiere of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (NBC, 9pm; airs again on USA on Sunday, October 5th). Kellie Martin guest stars.

The Fab 5 makes over a real estate speculator on a new Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (Bravo, 9pm and 11pm).

Season premiere of NYPD Blue (ABC, 9pm). The cops testify against Captain Fraker, they also handle a case involving the murder of the brother of a criminal. Daniel Benzali guest stars.

Will Amy say yes to Stuart (Reed Diamond)? How could she not? Well, she is one of the stupider characters on television so your guess is as good as mine. Find out on the season premiere of Judging Amy (CBS, 9pm).

Joey Slotnick and Julie Warner guest star on a new Nip/Tuck (FX, 9pm, 10:30pm).

My Tuesday Night Recommendations for this season:

7pm - 8pm
Watch Gilmore Girls (WB, 7pm) as it really is the best show on TV right now. When it’s not on or if you can record one thing and watch another, you might also try Navy NCIS (CBS, 7pm). And if you’re a big John Ritter fan, you might want to watch the first three episodes of 8 Simple Rules (ABC, 7pm) but I probably wouldn’t bother after those episodes air.

8pm - 9pm I’ve no strong feelings about the network shows scheduled during this time period. Once 24 returns, most folks will watch it on FOX during this time period. I may, though I’m not yet sure. In the meantime I like Less Than Perfect (ABC, 8:30pm) so probably will watch it regularly. Pity The Mullets (UPN, 8:30pm) is opposite it as I chuckled enough at the pilot that I might watch it occasionally or even regularly if it were on at 8pm. If you recorded either Gilmore Girls or Navy NCIS at 7pm, you could watch ‘em during this hour. To be honest, I’ve only ever seen one episode of The Guardian (CBS, 8pm) and it didn’t grab me; but I know others who really like the show (and it does have an above-average cast). I haven’t seen One Tree Hill (WB, 8pm) yet, so don’t know if it’ll be good or bad (I do plan to check it out and let y’all know what I think). Frasier (NBC, 8pm) isn’t good enough anymore that I feel compelled to watch it first-run, I figure I can catch these episodes in syndicated reruns eventually (or else over the summer). (Of course I’ll keep watching MI-5 (A&E, 8pm and midnight) while it’s around, though I may be watching/recording it at midnight rather than 8pm).

9pm - 10pm
Law & Order: SVU (NBC, 9pm) or NYPD Blue (ABC, 9pm)? That’s the question. If you really like both shows and can stand to wait a bit, you can watch SVU reruns on USA Sunday nights about two weeks after the episodes air on NBC (tonight’s episode airs at 10pm Sunday October 3rd). Me? I lost interest in NYPD Blue a few years ago and even though I’ve heard good things from time to time about the show in recent years, I just haven’t been hooked back in when I’ve watched. Law & Order: SVU has been mostly great for the last season or two after a very weak start so I’ll be watching SVU even though I’m sad to see Munch move from Fridays to Tuesdays. As for Judging Amy (CBS, 9pm)? I got too frustrated with Amy a while back, even though there are some good stories and performances on that show. I still watch sometimes just to see Reed Diamond. And no, you don’t have to miss Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (Bravo, 9pm and 11pm) as episodes also air at 11pm (and are rerun plenty of times during the week).
