Best Bets:

Paul Newman movies on TCM
Brilliant but Cancelled: The Pilot Season (Trio, 8pm-10pm; 11pm-1am)
Bonnie Hunt on The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS, 10:35pm)
Cool reruns: The Shield (FX, 8pm), Boomtown (NBC, 9pm)

News:

Dealing with still more family emergencies. Attended my great uncle John’s funeral yesterday; he was my Grandma’s last remaining sibling. And my Grandpa Olson’s sister Myrt was just rushed to the hospital today, my great aunt Pearl had been taking care of her and is frantic. Plus my parents are visiting from out of town, it’s all rather chaotic. Updates may come at odd hours or not at all this weekend.

Don’t forget to check out the 2003-04 Fall Schedule Grid (now with premiere dates!) and the TV on DVD page.

Some of the TV DVDs due out on Tuesday, September 2nd: Season 1 of Alias, Season 2 of Angel, Season 2 of C.S.I., Best of Designing Women, Saved By The Bell, and Season 2 of Xena, Warrior Princess. [More TV on DVD]

Primetime:

Paul Newman movies on TCM.

Bernie tries to stay one step ahead of his kids when they try to manipulate him on The Bernie Mac Show (FOX, 7pm).

Back to back episodes of While You Were Out (TLC, 7pm, 8pm; 10pm, 11pm). Room or yard makeovers done in one day with $1500. Followed by What Not To Wear (TLC, 9pm and midnight).

Back to back to back episodes of Monster Garage (Discovery, 7pm and 10pm, 8pm and 11pm, 9pm and midnight).

Dateline NBC devotes two hours to a look at “The New Unemployed.” Some of us think this is a rather old story, but it’s nice of Dateline to notice.

A mining official tries to save her husband and son when they’re trapped in a Cave In (PAX, 7pm). Mimi Rogers and Ted Shackleford star.

Humphrey Bogart is profiled on Biography (A&E, 7pm and 11pm).

Bob Newhart is profiled on a two-hour long Biography (A&E, 8pm-10pm; midnight-2am). Bob gets two hours and Bogie only one hour? Doesn’t seem right to me.

Brilliant but Cancelled: The Pilot Season (Trio, 8pm-10pm; 11pm-1am).

Rerun of the second season finale of The Shield (FX, 8pm).

Jerry Lewis talks up the telethon on Larry King Live (CNN, 8pm, 11pm, 2am).

David Spade’s One-Hit Wonderland (VH1, 8pm).

A convict on death row tries to get a reprieve by having a police officer held hostage on Boomtown (NBC, 9pm).

Late Night:

Another airing of this week’s Peacemakers (USA, 10pm).

A multimillionaire’s wife is kidnapped; a young girl is the victim of a hit-and-run on C.S.I. (TNN, 10pm).

New Orlando Jones Show (FX, 10pm).

As part of their “Brilliant, But Cancelled” series, Trio airs episodes of The PJs (Trio, 10pm and 1am) and God, The Devil, and Bob (Trio, 10:30pm and 1:30am).

Lucky (FX, 10:30pm).

Bonnie Hunt, Don Gavin on The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS, 10:35pm).

Ashton Kutcher, Kelly Rowland, Lang Lang on a rerun of The Tonight Show (NBC, 10:35pm).

“Mr. Monk Goes to the Circus” episode of Monk (USA, 11pm). Don’t watch if you have a fear of elephants.

Kitsch-en: Welcome Back, Kotter (TV Land, 11pm); Soap TV Land, 11:30pm); Square Pegs (TV Land, midnight); Fernwood 2Night (TV Land, 12:30am).

Dennis Miller, John Corbett, Adam Glasser on a rerun of Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NBC, 11:35pm).

Ashton Kutcher, Louie C.K., guest co-host Super Dave Osborne on a rerun of Jimmy Kimmel Live (ABC, check your local listings).

Scott Glenn, Traci Lords, Ben Lee on The Late Late Show (CBS, check your local listings).

James Van Der Beek, Sienna Miller, Train, Mike Birbiglia, Eric “Badlands” Booker on a rerun of Last Call with Carson Daly (NBC, check your local listings).
