I’m taking Saturday off, more or less. I mention some of the things airing on Saturday in the tomorrow section of these picks.

Best Bets:

Fastlane (FOX, 7pm, 8pm)
Law & Order: SVU (NBC, 9pm)
Summertime Unwrapped (Food Network, 9pm, midnight)
Seth Green, John Mellencamp on Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NBC, 11:35pm)

News:

Apologies for the lack of picks yesterday, I was busy going through stuff at my late Grandpa Krahn’s place in preparation for the estate sale next week. As promised, this month will be hectic as I’m moving and have a ton to do so if picks are irregular (sometimes missing, sometimes late), that’s why.

Just a reminder that Season 4 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will be released on DVD on Tuesday (order it now from amazon.com and it should ship on Sunday or Monday). [More TV on DVD]

The Homicide: Life on the Street DVD set is #17 on amazon.com’s TV DVD bestsellers page today, #61 on amazon.com’s DVD bestsellers list. 27 sets have been ordered via links on my sites.

2003-04 fall schedule grid is still available.

Daytime:

Christine Lahti, Evan Marriott on a rerun of The Caroline Rhea Show (syndicated, check your local listings).

“Behind the Scenes” on Dr. Phil (syndicated, check your local listings).

“Balance Your Energy, Balance Your Life” on a rerun of Oprah (syndicated, check your local listings).

“The Replacement” and “Out Of My Mind” episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (FX, 5pm, 6pm).

“Johnny finds out that Stillson’s congressional opponent is hiding war secrets” on The Dead Zone (Sci-Fi, 6pm).

Primetime Grid:

Primetime:

Bloopers and Other Embarrassing Moments (Cartoon Network, 6pm). Note the network– these are bloopers from animated series. Sweet.

Baseball: Pittsburgh Pirates at Atlanta Braves (TBS, 6:30pm).

NBA Shootaround (ABC, 7pm) followed by NBA Finals, Game 2 (ABC, 7:30pm).

Season premiere or series return or whatever of Baby Bob (CBS, 7pm). Yuck. And yet I’m a big fan of Adam Arkin, Joely Fisher, Elliot Gould, and Holland Taylor (who all star in this show). I think that’s why this really bothers me: they deserve much better material. Here’s the plot: “Sam agrees to do a radio interview after his new book is released, but Bob accidentally answers listener’s questions when Sam falls asleep.” Whatever.

Back to back reruns of Fastlane (FOX, 7pm, 8pm). First episode is the pilot episode, in the second episode “Billie goes under cover to try to bust lesbian robbers.” This is the sort of show that actually seems just perfect for the summer months– ‘cuz it’s total fluff. Eye candy. Sometimes fun and funny. With wacky guest stars. Jaime Pressly and George Hamilton guest star in the second episode; Vondie Curtis Hall, Jennifer Sky, Paul Gleason, Craig Sheffer, Big Boy, and Isaac Hayes guest star in the pilot.

“Tom Brokaw examines the issue of affirmative action in light of an upcoming Supreme Court case” in Tom Brokaw Reports: A Question of Fairness (NBC, 7pm).

Dwight Schultz Alert:
Dwight Schultz makes his first appearance as Barclay in the “Hollow Pursuits” episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNN, 7pm).

Back to back to back episodes of While You Were Out (TLC, 7pm, 8pm, 9pm; 10pm, 11pm, midnight). Room or yard makeovers done in one day with $1500. ” A woman has her husband’s den turned into a 1950s-style diner,” a “Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired bedroom,” and “a woman turns her backyard into a miniature basketball court for her husband.”

Ah, musicals: How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (TCM, 7pm). The Music Man (TCM, 9pm), and South Pacific (TCM, midnight).

“Trying to help a young drug addict get clean, Olshansky contends with a drug dealer” on Hack (CBS, 8pm). David Morse and Andre Braugher star.

“Television reporter Lance Williams meets the young bone-marrow donor who saved his life” on Dateline NBC (NBC, 8pm).

Baseball: Minnesota Twins at San Diego Padres (which begs the question: should I have made a wager with the Vidiots of Teevee.org?) (Hi guys!). 8pm on 45 in Minneapolis, you may get the game depending on your cable/satellite package (check your listings).
A woman jumped from a balcony (or was she pushed?) on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (NBC, 9pm). Of course it’s complicated.

“Frozen treats; grilling; hot sauces; collectible summertime items” on Summertime Unwrapped (Food Network, 9pm-10pm, midnight-1am).

Charlie’s Angels Uncensored (MTV, 9pm).

Rerun of the “Mr. Monk Goes to the Carnival” episode of Monk (USA, 9pm and 11pm). Season premiere is Friday, June 20th.

Late Night:

For some reason I love the description for this Law & Order: Criminal Intent (USA, 10pm) from the TV listings: “Detectives hunt for a person with large hands when investigating a woman’s murder.” Um, okay.

Reruns of Lucky (FX, 10pm, 10:30pm).

Dave takes a day off, Tom Arnold guest hosts The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS, 10:35pm). With guests Darrell Hammond, Karolina Kurkova, Eddie Brill, Train.

Charlize Theron, broadcaster Chris Berman, Michelle Branch on The Tonight Show (NBC, 10:35pm).

Kitsch-en: Welcome Back, Kotter (TV Land, 11pm); Soap (TV Land, 11:30pm); Square Pegs (TV Land, midnight); Fernwood 2Nite (TV Land, 12:30am).

Seth Green, John Mellencamp on Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NBC, 11:35pm).

Cole Hauser, Kelly Osbourne, the Datsuns, guest co-host Method Man on Jimmy Kimmel Live (ABC, check your local listings).

Eva Mendes, Buzzcocks on The Late Late Show (CBS, check your local listings).

Ashanti, Barry Zito, Bill Burr, D4 on a rerun of Last Call with Carson Daly (NBC, check your local listings).

Tomorrow:

I’m going to take Saturday off, more or less, will return with picks for Sunday.

Not much on this Saturday, but there is a big 48 hour I Dream of Jeannie marathon on TV Land this weekend. Belmont Stakes is on NBC on Saturday afternoon if you’re into horse races.

MTV airs an entire season of The Osbournes and reruns the MTV Movie Awards. Food Network has Iron Chef 20th Century Battle (Food, 8pm and 11pm). TLC reruns the episode of Trading Spaces from London. TCM airs Cabaret (TCM, 7pm) and Guys and Dolls (TCM, 9pm).

Plus some baseball games and the Usual Saturday Stuff.
