Best Bets | News | Daytime | Primetime | Late Night | Tomorrow

Best Bets:

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Return to Middle Earth (WB, 7pm)
Christmas in Rockefeller Center (NBC, 7pm-8pm)
Diane Sawyer interviews Whitney Houston on Primetime Special Edition (ABC, 8pm)
Macy Gray guest stars on MDs (ABC, 9pm)
Dennis Miller on The Tonight Show (NBC, 10:35pm).
Neil Diamond on The Caroline Rhea Show (ABC Family, 11pm)
Reruns, reruns, reruns!

News:

Season 1 of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is now available for pre-order on DVD. Release date is February 18th. Yay! Deep Space Nine really is my favorite of the Star Trek series (other than the original, of course, which will always be near and dear to my heart).

Other TV DVD sets recently made available for pre-orders: Season 3 of M*A*S*H, Season 2 of All In The Family, Red Dwarf Series 1 and Series 2, Season 1 of NYPD Blue on DVD, and lots more good stuff. Visit the TV on DVD page for our full list of what’s available.

Daytime:

Diane Sawyer, Josh Groban, Andy Richter, Winston Cup Champion Tony Stewart on Live with Regis and Kelly (syndicated, check your local listings).

Jerry Lewis, Jay Thomas on The View (ABC, check your local listings).

Kathy Griffin, Laura Pausini, Zach Braff on The Caroline Rhea Show (syndicated, check your local listings).

“Self Matters, Part 2″ on Dr. Phil (syndicated, check your local listings).

The Crocodile Hunter on Oprah (syndicated, check your local listings).

The classic “Steak Your Claim” episode of Good Eats (Food Network, Noon).

Barbara Bain guest stars on Scarecrow & Mrs. King (PAX, 3pm).

Part 1 of the 2-part pilot movie for The A-Team (TNN, 3pm). It’s a strange episode because Tim Dunigan plays “Face.” He was fired after the pilot because he wasn’t Stephen J. Cannell’s first choice for the role (Dirk Benedict was) and because he was so much taller than Mr. T. Well, that’s what most people say. Dunigan himself says that he thought Brandon Tartikoff thought he “looked too young for the part.” Whatever. I’m just glad Dirk Benedict plays the part for the rest of the series. First episode was directed by prolific TV director Rod Holcomb.

Gen and Hildy go to London to do the Trading Spaces (TLC, 3pm) thing with the help of Handy Andy (from Changing Rooms). It’s a weird episode that features the contant whining of one of the homeowners (Laura). I’d never let Hildi decorate anything of mine, I’m just saying. (You won’t believe what she does to the floor of a children’s room!). This aired on Saturday night, but you can catch it today if you missed it then.

Song of the Thin Man (TCM, 5:30pm).

“Life Serial” and “All The Way” episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (FX, 5pm, 6pm).

Felicity (We, 6pm and midnight) begins her junior year of college.

Rerun of part 2 (of 10) of Taken (Sci-Fi, 6pm).

Primetime:

Michael Rosenbaum (a.k.a. Lex Luthor) hosts The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Return to Middle Earth (WB, 7pm). It’s an hour-long preview of the forthcoming film.

Christmas in Rockefeller Center (NBC, 7pm-8pm). Al Roker and Ann Curry host the lighting of the tree in Rockefeller Center. Michelle Branch, Kelly Clarkson, Sheryl Crow, Josh Groban, Carly Simon, Barry Manilow, and Kelly Rowland perform.

“Bernie and Wanda strive to present a united front when disciplining the children” on The Bernie Mac Show (FOX, 7pm).

Rerun of the episode of Enterprise (UPN, 7pm) wherein “T’Pol tells Archer and Trip her great-grandmother crash-landed in Pennsylvania in the 1950s.” I thought this sounded really hokey, but some friends of mine insist it was an enjoyable episode.

Part 3 (of 10) of the Steven Spielberg produced science fiction miniseries Taken (Sci-Fi, 8pm, 10pm, midnight). Are any of you watching this? Is it any good? I’ve heard next-to-nothing about it thus far.

Diane Sawyer interviews Whitney Houston on a Primetime Special Edition (ABC, 8pm).

A two-hour installment of The Amazing Race (CBS, 8pm-10pm) that is subtitled “Why Did You Have to Take Your Pants Off?!” Yikes.

I don’t care what you think, I think Fastlane (FOX, 8pm) is kinda fun. “Billie’s friend may pay the ultimate price after helping the team take down a drug lord. “

Rerun of an episode of The West Wing (NBC, 8pm) from last February titled “Hartsfield’s Landing.” ” On the day before the New Hampshire primary the President plays a game of diplomatic and military chess with the Chinese government over Taiwan while playing games of actual chess with Toby and Sam.” I’m stunned because I think I managed to somehow miss this episode last season. D’oh.

Reed Diamond, Kristin Davis, and Tim Meadows star in Three Days (ABC Family, 8pm). A holiday movie from last year. ” An angel gives a literary agent a second chance with his wife after she suddenly dies before Christmas.”

Katherine Heigl, Ione Skye on a rerun of The Twilight Zone (UPN, 8pm).

“Helena and Detective Reese clash when tracking a serial killer who steals metahumans’ powers” on a rerun of what I thought was a rather wan episode of Birds of Prey (WB, 8pm).

“Pantry Raid II: Cool Beans” episode of Good Eats (Food Network, 8pm and 11pm).

New episodes of South Park (Comedy Central, 9pm) and Insomniac with Dave Attell (Comedy Central, 9:30pm). Waitaminute, I thougth the season premiere of Insomniac wasn’t on ’til tomorrow. The listings confuse me here, folks, as they disagree depending on what source I check. Ach well, the new episode will run a few times, I’m sure.

Macy Gray guest stars on MDs (ABC, 9pm). Bet you forgot about this show. William Fichtner and John Hannah star in this drama about doctors who are “characters” and “break the rules.” I’ve loved William Fichtner ever since his days on As The World Turns. Just thought I’d mention that.

“Lt. Van Buren learns that someone may have tampered with evidence she used to convict a man” on a good rerun from last season of Law & Order (NBC, 9pm) titled “The Myth of Fingerprints.”

Perhaps all the Roasts airing on Comedy Central this week have put you in the mood to see “The Roast” episode of The Larry Sanders Show (Bravo, 9pm and midnight).

Late Night:

Colin Quinn on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (Comedy Central, 10pm and midnight).

Edward Norton, John Mayer on a rerun of The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS, 10:35pm).

Dennis Miller, John Mayer on The Tonight Show (NBC, 10:35pm).

Neil Diamond on The Caroline Rhea Show (ABC Family, 11pm)

Sarah Michelle Gellar, Larry Hagman, the Hives on a rerun of Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NBC, 11:35pm).

Kiefer Sutherland, Emily Procter, Uncle Kracker on a rerun of The Late Late Show (CBS, check your local listings).

Harvey Keitel, Tracy Chapman on Last Call with Carson Daly (NBC, check your local listings).

Tomorrow:

Live with Regis and Kelly (syndicated, check your local listings).

Mary Tyler Moore on The View (ABC, check your local listings).

William Shatner, Brooke Burke on The Caroline Rhea Show (syndicated, check your local listings).

“You’re Not Who I Married” on Dr. Phil (syndicated, check your local listings).

“Murders at Ft. Bragg” on Oprah (syndicated, check your local listings).
