News | Best Bets | Daytime | Primetime | Late Night | Tomorrow

News:

Sorry these picks are a bit late today, I got carried away working on previews for each night of the week for the new fall season (watch for those, coming soon). For my “Best Bets” today, I’m just spotlighting the new stuff (even though it’s entirely possible that not-so-new episodes of Monk or Babylon 5 are actually better quality).

A hearty “welcome” to you if you’re coming from Tom Heald’s Remote Patrol. Here’s hoping Tom Gets Well soon (thanks, Tom, as ever, for so many things. Including sending some traffic this way). Tom’s always funny in his picks, I don’t know how he manages it (I have a hard enough time running down what’s on).

The winners of the 54th annual Creative Arts Emmys have been announced. Six Feet Under won a lot of awards. 9/11 won for best non-fiction special. The Osbournes won for best reality series.Futurama was named best animated series.

Still useful: my Fall TV Schedule Grid (with premiere dates).

Best Bets:

Season premiere of Oprah (syndicated, check your local listings)
Series premiere of Dr. Phil (syndicated, check your local listings)
Series premiere of Oprah After the Show (Oxygen, 6:30pm, 9pm, 11pm, 7:30am)
Season premiere of 7th Heaven (WB, 7pm)
Series premiere of Everwood (WB, 8pm-9:10pm)
Series premiere of Body and Soul (PAX, 8pm)

Daytime:

Toby Keith, Ana Gasteyer, Caroline gets African drum lessons on The Caroline Rhea Show (syndicated, check your local listings).

Series premiere of Dr. Phil (syndicated, check your local listings). It will usually air during the hour before or after Oprah on the same station (in Minneapolis, it’s on at 3pm on WCCO Channel 4, right before Oprah).

“Good News!” and a surprise “mystery guest” on the season premiere of Oprah (syndicated, check your local listings).

Neil Gaiman wrote “The Day of The Dead” episode of Babylon 5 (Sci-Fi, 4pm, letterboxed). Penn and Teller guest star.

It’s all about Jonathan in the “Superstar” episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (FX, 6pm).

Primetime:

Baseball: Atlanta Braves at Florida Marlins (TBS, 6pm).

Series premiere of Oprah After the Show (Oxygen, weekdays at 6:30pm, 9pm, 11pm, and 7:30am). Last season you could see what went on “after the show” (the show being Oprah) on the Oprah website, now you can see it on TV.

Mary gets involved with David Bradford (of Eight Is Enough)? Huh? Yup, that’s right, Grant Goodeve is playing a pilot who is the object of Mary’s affection on the season premiere of 7th Heaven (WB, 7pm).

Drew tries to stop Kate from getting married on a new episode of The Drew Carey Show (ABC, 7pm). Am I spoiling anything if I mention Christa Miller is leaving the series? Have no fear, Cynthia Watros (of Titus and Guiding Light) is joining the cast. I imagine this show could use some change.

National Geographic Channel Presents Pyramids Live: Secret Chambers Revealed (FOX, 7pm-9pm).

Miss America and Kathy Griffin (you’ll never get those two confused) make appearances on a new Whose Line Is It Anyway? (ABC, 7:30pm).

Series premiere of Everwood (WB, 8pm-9:10pm). Be warned that the pilot episode of this series runs an extra 10 minutes. Set your VCRs and Tivos accordingly. Treat Williams stars as a neurosurgeon who gives up his practice after his wife dies, he moves himself and his kids to Colorado where he sets up a free clinic and gets a fresh start. Some might call this a cross between Providence and Gilmore Girls but with guys. TV Guide calls it “too cloying and quirky by half” and call the lead character “self-righteous.” It sounds like the folks working on the show want to create a series with a Northern Exposure feel, that’s about a very realistic relationship between a father and his teen son.

Series premiere of Body & Soul (PAX, 8pm). Peter Strauss and Larissa Laskin star in this new series about “alternative medicine and the internal struggles at a hospital attempting an integrated approach to healing body, mind, and spirit.” Sounds like it has an interesting ensemble of characters.

NFL Football: Philadelphia Eagles at Washington Redskins (ABC, 8pm).

“Debra and Ray reminisce about the first time they made love” on Everybody Loves Raymond (CBS, 8pm).

“Melting Pot” and “Lunchbox Treats” episodes of Unwrapped (Food Network, 8pm, 8:30pm; 11pm and 11:30pm).

It’s the episode of C.S.I. (CBS, 9pm) that takes the gang to Miami where they meet up with at least some of the cast of the new soon-to-premiere series C.S.I. Miami (which will air in this timeslot, Mondays at 9pm).

Another airing of this week’s new episode of Monk (USA, 9pm), “Mr. Monk and the Marathon Man” which premiered last Friday on USA.

The conclusion of last season’s two-part season finale of Crossing Jordan (NBC, 9pm) definitely sets up the beginning of this season. So you may want to watch it again to refresh your memory or watch it for the first time if you’re planning to check out the series this season. (It is a show worth checking out, improved dramatically over the course of it’s first season, has a truly fine supporting cast that often steals the show).

Johnny Depp on Inside the Actor’s Studio (Bravo, 9pm).

Sarah Jessica Parker on The Isaac Mizrahi Show (Oxygen, 9:30pm).

Late Night:

C.S.I. (TNN, 10pm) joins TNN’s lineup. Episodes will air on Monday nights at 10pm. The very first episode airs tonight, you can catch the series from the beginning. (Some listings say that tonight’s episode will start at 10:05pm rather than 10pm).

John Miller (of ABC News) on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (Comedy Central, 10pm and midnight).

Al Pacino, Roger Clemens (of the New York Yankees) on a rerun of The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS, 10:35pm).

Bernie Mac, Jill Hennessy, Our Lady Peace on The Tonight Show (NBC, 10:35pm).

Susan Lucci, Alan Cumming, Lee Ann Womack on The Caroline Rhea Show (ABC Family, 11pm).

Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Chaplin, Alanis Morissette on a rerun of Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NBC, 11:35pm).

Donny Osmond, Katey Sagal, comic Bob Marley on The Late Late Show (CBS, check your local listings).

Homicide: Life on the Street reruns are no longer airing on weeknights on Court TV as of this week. You might try complaining to Court TV if you really miss the reruns. Episodes will still air at least once on weekends. Better yet, sign up to be notified when there’s a DVD release of the series (by signing up, you encourage them to relese the series on DVD).

Jennifer Esposito, Rick Fox, Nelly on a rerun of Last Call with Carson Daly (NBC, check your local listings).

Tomorrow Morning:

Sally Field, Jamie Lee Curtis, The Scottos make comfort food on Today (NBC, 7am-10am).

Kate Hudson, Chef Michael Chiarello (“Cooking Casual”), part 2 (of 5) of a series called Kids Connection on The Early Show (CBS, 7am-9am).

Matthew Reeve on his father’s recovery (his father is Christopher Reeve), eating your way out of depression.on Good Morning America (ABC, 7am-9am).

Chef Mario Batali, Sally Field, Jeff Probst on Live with Regis and Kelly (syndicated, check your local listings).

Jamie Lee Curtis, Damon Wayans, Dr. Nicholas Perricone on The View (ABC, check your local listings).

Cedric the Entertainer, Jeff Probst, the Pretenders on The Caroline Rhea Show (syndicated, check your local listings).

“What Your Mother Never Told You About Motherhood” on Oprah (syndicated, check your local listings).

Enjoy these picks? Tell me why (or just say “hi”) and/or make a donation (if you haven’t done such things already or in a while). Thanks!
