News | Best Bets | Daytime | Primetime | Late Night

News:

You can now pre-order DVD box sets of Sports Night, Once and Again, and Felicity.

The Sports Night set contains every episode (from both seasons) of that brilliant series. The other two sets are of the first seasons of those cool shows, with other sets (for other seasons) to follow. (Needless to say, all three sets are on wishlist).

Best Bets:

As The World Turns (CBS, check your local listings)
Cool rerun of Law & Order: Criminal Intent (NBC, 9pm)
Series premiere of Contest Searchlight (Comedy Central, 9:30pm)
Kevin Pollak, Jeremy Northam, Jim Gaffigan on Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NBC, 11:35pm)

Daytime:

I’ve gotta say that I’ve absolutely loved the last week or so of As The World Turns (CBS, check your local listings). In which Hal and Emily try to get married. Looking forward to today’s episode.

Baseball: Houston Astros at Chicago Cubs (ESPN, 1pm).

Nelly Furtado, Martin Short, author Jennifer Toth on a rerun of The Rosie O’Donnell Show (syndicated, check your local listings).

“What Do You Stand For?” on Oprah (syndicated, check your local listings).

It’s “A Bitter Suite,” the first musical episode of Xena, Warrior Princess (Oxygen, 5pm and 10pm).

“The City on the Edge of Forever ” episode of Star Trek (Sci-Fi, 6pm).

Baseball: San Francisco Giants at Atlanta Braves (ESPN, 6pm).

Primetime:

Bing Crosby and Ingrid Bergman in The Bells of St. Mary’s (TCM, 7pm).

Softball: Little League World Series, Final (ESPN2, 7pm).

Rerun of the episode of Enterprise (UPN, 7pm) where they encounter pirates (a.k.a. Ferengi).

Crank calls, puppets, and celebrity voices: that’s what makes up Crank Yankers (Comedy Central, 7pm-9pm). Four episodes, back to back (to back to back).

“Jordan joins the football team in hope of contributing a trophy to the family’s awards shelf” on The Bernie Mac Show (FOX, 8pm).

“A uranium-bearing rig crashes in an Idaho tunnel” on The West Wing (NBC, 8pm).

“Fry Hard” episode of Good Eats (Food Network, 8pm and 11pm).

An episode of South Park (Comedy Central, 9pm) titled “Red Hot Catholic Love.”

Baseball: Boston Red Sox at Seattle Mariners (ESPN2, 9pm).

ICU: Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ABC, 9pm).

Robert Knepper guest stars on Law & Order: Criminal Intent (NBC, 9pm). It’s the beginning of NBC’s “Criminal Intent-athon” (yes, they’ve actually aired commercials calling it that). Episodes of this great series will air tonight, Thursday, and Friday. Vincent D’Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe, Courtney B. Vance, and Jamey Sheridan star in the best new series of last season. Possibly the best Law & Order right now. I hope that if you missed the show during the regular season, you’ve been catching up with it this summer.

Randy Newman on Musicians (Bravo, 9pm).

“Denis Leary and an aspiring writer/ director develop a sitcom for Comedy Central” on the series premiere of Contest Searchlight (Comedy Central, 9:30pm). If you recall HBO’s Project Searchlight, this is kindof like that, but with a TV series instead of a movie, I guess.

Late Night:

Kevin Nealon on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (Comedy Central, 10pm and midnight).

Will Smith, U.S. World Cup soccer star Landon Donovan, Yo-Yo Ma and the Silkroads Ensemble on a rerun of The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS, 10:35pm) from June.

Arsenio Hall, 100-year-old diver Viola Cady Krahn (Hey! I wonder if we’re related!), Donnel Jones on The Tonight Show (NBC, 10:35pm).

Kevin Pollak, Jeremy Northam, Jim Gaffigan on Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NBC, 11:35pm).

Max Perlich joins the cast of Homicide: Life on the Street (Court TV, midnight).

Freddy Soto on The Late Late Show (CBS, check your local listings).

Walter Mosley on Up Close (ABC, check your local listings).

Carla Gugino, Heather Mitts, Filter on Last Call with Carson Daly (NBC, check your local listings).

Enjoy these picks? Tell me why (or just say “hi”) and/or make a donation (if you haven’t done such things already or in a while). I’m not paid to put together these picks, right now I’m unemployed altogether, so every little bit of money (or encouragement) helps. Thanks!
