new years eve – new years day
Happy New Year! Here’s hoping 2002 is better than 2001 for all of us.
Picks for Tuesday (a.k.a. New Year’s Day) follow these picks for Monday (New Year’s Eve).
Fitness and New Years drinks (a classic combination) on The Early Show (CBS, 7am-9am).
Nothing but Behind the Music on VH1, so be careful. You’ve been warned. If you look at that station for just a few minutes, you may find yourself watching many many hours of the stuff.
And as if that weren’t temptation enough, there’s a Real World marathon on MTV (until 6pm).
And an In Search Of . . . marathon on the History Channel (History Channel, 7am-7pm).
Of course you’re better off watching The Twilight Zone marathon on the Sci-Fi channel (runs all day, all night).
Or (better still, IMHO) a Magnum, P.I. marathon on A&E (A&E, 7am-7pm). Featuring a bunch of classic two-part episodes.
See every Marx Brothers movie (i think!) this New Year’s Eve: Love Happy (TCM, 8:30am); A Night in Casablanca (TCM, 10am); The Big Store (TCM, 11am); Go West (TCM, 1pm); At The Circus (TCM, 2:30pm); Room Service (TCM, 4pm); Monkey Business (TCM, 5:30pm); Duck Soup (TCM, 7pm); Horse Feathers (TCM, 8:30pm); The Cocoanuts (TCM, 10pm); Animal Crackers (TCM, 11:30pm); A Night at the Opera (TCM, 1:30am); A Day at the Races (TCM, 3am); Adventures of Don Juan (TCM, 5am).
James Stewart stars in classic films by Alfred Hitchcock: The Man Who Knew Too Much (AMC, 10:30am), Rear Window (AMC, 1pm).
As The World Turns and Guiding Light are both preempted, will not air today.
Bravo begins airing Hill Street Blues as part of their classic TV showcase (they’ve also aired St. Elsewhere and thirtysomething). They launch the series run with a special airing of the first three episodes, including the pilot (Bravo, 2pm-6pm).
Ron Howard, Lenny Kravitz on The Rosie O’Donnell Show (syndicated, check your local listings).
I remember thinking Love At First Bite (AMC, 3pm) hilarious when I saw it when I was a lot younger, I wonder if I’d think it that funny today.
The 62nd Annual Orange Bowl Parade (PAX, 5pm).
I totally love the “Lover’s Walk” episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (FX, 6pm) ‘cuz of Spike’s return and his angst about Dru and stuff like that.
Remember when Peter Jennings stayed up for way too many hours hosting ABC’s big millennium New Year’s thing a couple of years ago? That was pretty cool (really!). ABC tries to recapture a little of that magic, as Jennings hosts 2002 (ABC, 5:30pm-9pm). It’s a look at New Year’s celebrations all over the world, which will include some musical performances and a whole lot of fireworks, I bet. Alas, it’s not a 20 hour event.
Ring in the new year with a Law & Order mini-marathon (A&E, 8pm-3am).
Dick Clark’s Primetime New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 2002 (ABC, 9pm), then your local news, then Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 2002 (ABC, 10:30pm).
MTV has a New Year’s special starting at 9pm, as does the Discovery Channel.
George Clooney, Martha Stewart on a rerun of The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS, 10:35pm).
New Year’s Eve edition of The Tonight Show (NBC, 10:35pm) with Bill Maher, Blue Man Group, and Chris Isaak.
Court TV airs a marathon of the first six episodes of NYPD Blue (Court TV, 11pm-5am).
James Woods, Wayne Newton on a rerun of Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NBC, 11:35pm).
Tuesday, January 1, 2002
Behind the Music marathon continues on VH1 (until 8pm).
The Twilight Zone marathon continues on the Sci-Fi channel (’til 2am Wednesday).
TNN has a Baywatch marathon.
TV Land has a marathon that features first episodes of classic series like Happy Days (TV Land, 6am and 4pm); Laverne & Shirley (TV Land, 6:30am and 4:30pm); Get Smart (TV Land, 7am); Hogan’s Heroes (TV Land, 7:30am); F-Troop (TV Land, 8am), The Dick Van Dyke Show (TV Land, 8:30am); and plenty of others (full listings can be found here).

History’s Lost and Found marathon (History Channel, 7am-6pm).
The NYPD Blue marathon that began on New Year’s Eve continues with episodes 7-22 (Court TV, 8am-midnight). That’s right, they’re airing the entire first season.
Coming Up Roses (CBS, 9am-10am). Coverage of the Rose Bowl Parade.
The Making of the 2002 Rose Parade (HGTV, 9am).
Florida Citrus Bowl Parade (ABC, 9am).
The Fiesta Bowl Parade (ABC Family Channel, 10am-11am).
The Tournament of Roses Parade (CBS, 10am-12:30pm) also (ABC, 10am-Noon) and (NBC, 10am-11:30am) and (HGTV, 10am-Noon). Note that HGTV is covering the parade without any commercial interruptions (good for them!).
Like Alias? Or simply been meaning to see if the show is any good? You can catch all ten of the episodes that have aired (thus far) in order in a nice marathon on ABC Family Channel (ABC Family Channel, 11am-9pm). Jennifer Garner, Victor Garber, and Michael Vartan star in this series about a couple of double-agents. It’s fun, definitely worth a look. I found the pilot episode painfully slow and predictable, but that was a long version that aired without commercials; it looks like maybe they’re airing an edited down version here. In any event, if the pilot isn’t your speed (though it might be, lots of people seemed to love it), keep watching as the show improves as it goes along. Though it is farfetched.
Unwrapped marathon (Food Network, 11am-5:30pm). It’s a cute fun sometimes fascinating show. If you dig pop culture and/or food, especially.
SoapNet’s FANtastic Countdown (SoapNet, Noon-8pm; 8pm-4am). Top Ten Episodes of ABC Soaps for the past year, as voted on by the fans.
If you aren’t getting enough first episodes on TV Land, FX has a marathon of first episodes of their shows including Beverly Hills, 90210 (FX, 1pm); The X-Files (FX, 4pm and midnight); Buffy the Vampire Slayer (FX, 5pm-7pm); M*A*S*H (FX, 7pm-8pm); The Practice (FX, 8pm); and Ally McBeal (FX, 10pm). And yeah, this is the start of a whole new run of Buffy from the beginning on FX, where it will continue airing episodes at 5pm and 6pm weekdays (rerunning at 6am and 7am the following morning).
CBS will air “classic” episodes of their soaps (CBS, check your local listings), except for The Young and the Restless which is preempted. The Bold and the Beautiful will air yet another of Brooke’s weddings. The As The World Turns rerun will be of the episode where Kim Hughes has a sortof It’s A Wonderful Life experience from December 1997. And Guiding Light will air Philip and Beth’s wedding from 1991.
Here’s lookin’ at you, Casablanca (TCM, 2pm). A great great movie.
Another airing of the pilot movie of Hill Street Blues (Bravo, 6pm-8pm).
For the Troops: MTV’s USO Show (MTV, 7pm-9pm).
Good idea: HGTV reruns their coverage of The 113th Annual Tournament of Roses Parade in primetime (HGTV, 7pm, again at 9:30pm).
Rerun of the first two episodes of this season of Gilmore Girls (WB, 7pm-9pm).
Rerun of the “Flooded” episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (UPN, 7pm).
Walking with Dinosaurs (Discovery Channel, 7pm-10pm).
New episode of Roswell (UPN, 8pm) called “A Tale of Two Parties” which is set on New Year’s.
Stupid Pet Tricks, Vince Vaughn on a rerun of The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS, 10:35pm).
Kelly Ripa on The Tonight Show (NBC, 10:35pm).
Caroline Rhea; Rich Hall on a very funny rerun of Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NBC, 11:35pm).
Christine Lahti, Zac Braff, Keb Mo on a rerun of The Late Late Show (CBS, 11:35pm).
