thursday – friday
Picks for Friday follow these picks for Thursday (scroll on down to see them).
Lauren Graham (of Gilmore Girls) begins her guest stint as an efficiency expert on NewsRadio (A&E, 11:30am and 5:30pm).
Gwyneth Paltrow, Emeril Lagasse, Darrell Hammond, Kathryn Erbe (of Law & Order: Criminal Intent) on The Rosie O’Donnell Show (syndicated, check your local listings).
When Angel was bad, he was very very bad. Reruns of the episodes “Passion” and “Becoming, Part 1″ of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (FX, 5pm, 6pm; Friday at 6am and 7am).
It’s definitely a place called “rerunsville” on the networks during primetime.
Historians discuss this past year in 2001: A Year for History (History Channel, 7pm-9pm; 11pm-1am).
Jamie Lee Curtis narrates the special Marlene Dietrich: Her Own Song (TCM, 7pm-8:30pm; 10:30pm-midnight). Contains exclusive footage and interviews. Followed by classic Dietrich in Blonde Venus (TCM, 8:30pm).
Rerun of “The Exchange Student Episode” of Maybe It’s Me (WB, 7:30pm). I like watching this show to see Fred Willard and Julia Sweeney as the wacky parents. And isn’t that the Reverend from Little House as the strange Grandpa?
I’m told that this rerun of C.S.I. (CBS, 8pm) where they investigate the death of a passenger on a plane is really good.
Another airing of The World Trade Center (History Channel, 9pm and 1am), a special about the construction of the towers.
Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn in Charade (AMC, 9pm). A fabulous movie, made that way by two smashing stars.
“Boy Next Door” is the episode of Ally McBeal (FX, 10pm) where Billy dies. Just in case you missed that one and were curious about how it went down.
New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani makes his last appearance as Mayor on The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS, 10:35pm).
Billy Bob Thornton, reptiles, Barry Manilow on The Tonight Show (NBC, 10:35pm).
Tom Everett Scott, Kevin Pollak, Raul Malo on Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NBC, 11:35pm).
Mark- Paul Gosselaar (of NYPD Blue), Annabeth Gish (of The X-Files) on The Late Late Show (CBS, check your local listings).
Chevy Chase is among the panelists on Politically Incorrect (ABC, check your local listings).
“A Ghost of a Chance” is the brilliant second-ever episode of Homicide: Life on the Street (Court TV, midnight). Best Show on TV, but I’ve said this many times before.
Friday, December 28, 2001
Travelers (Travel Channel, 8am) visits Minneapolis.
Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn in Charade (AMC, 9am).
Sci-Fi Channel shows a bunch of episodes of American Gothic (Sci-Fi, 10am-3pm). Gary Cole starred in this dark, unique series.
“The Public Domain” is one of the funniest episodes of NewsRadio (A&E, 11:30am and 5:30pm) ever. Bill (Phil Hartman) goes all Mark Russell on everyone. Jimmy James (Stephen Root) can’t act natural on camera. The efficiency expert (Lauren Graham) has Dave (Dave Foley) freaking out more than usual. It’s hilarious.
The very funny film that inspired the very funny broadway show: The Producers (TCM, Noon).
Ali is The Greatest (AMC, 1pm and 7pm).
My favorite breed of dog, the Scottish Terrier, is featured on Breed All About It (Animal Planet, 1:30pm).
Laura and Remington visit a “sensitivity spa” (oh-oh) on Remington Steele (PAX, 3pm).
Rerun of the episode of The Rosie O’Donnell Show (syndicated, check your local listings) which featured castmembers of Harry Potter including Robbie Coltrane, Richard Harris, and those three kids (surely you know the ones I mean).
Surely by now you know about “The Trouble with Tribbles.” On Star Trek (Sci-FI, 5pm). I could quote you almost every line, but then you’d have to hurt me.
Here be a rerun of the “Here There Be Dragons” episode of The Chronicle (Sci-FI, 6pm and 2am). George Takei guest stars.
The “Becoming, Part 2″ and “Faith, Hope, and Trick” episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (FX, 5pm, 6pm).
Ellen inadvertantly causes the school bus driver to retire and then hijinks ensue on The Ellen Show (CBS, 7:30pm).
I can’t believe this is on ABC: Domino Day 2001 (ABC, 8pm). An international team tries to break the world record for largest domino display. Really. Um. This is a step up from the other stuff they were showing in this timeslot, but I still miss Thieves.
Zim messes around with bologna DNA or something on Invader ZIM (Nick, 8:30pm).
I think I need to see any episode of anything called “Eli Whitney’s Flesh-Eating Mistake”. This is on Time Squad (Cartoon Network, 9pm).
Rerun of the “Manhunt” episode of Law & Order: SVU (NBC, 9pm).
Battle Sea Bass on Iron Chef (Food Network, 9pm and midnight).
Lauren Graham (of Gilmore Girls) on The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS, 10:35pm).
Elijah Wood (of Lord of the Rings) on The Tonight Show (NBC, 10:35pm).
Patrick Stewart on Late Night with Conan O’Brien (NBC, 11:35pm).
A Christmas episode of Party of Five (Lifetime, midnight).
The “Night of the Dead Living” episode of Homicide: Life on the Street (Court TV, midnight). When the series originally aired on NBC, this episode– the third episode produced– was held back and didn’t air ’til late in the season, because the network felt it was too slow-paced and dull for the audience. Of course it figures that it’s one of my favorite episodes, because the focus is on the characters just hanging out at the station on one very long night.
