weekend

Picks for Sunday follow Saturday’s Picks (scroll down for ‘em).

This weekend’s Fandemonium TV Land marathon features The Jeffersons (TV Land, 5am Saturday – 5am Sunday).

Cool movies: Stagecoach (TCM, 11am), Cat Ballou (TCM, 1pm); Father Goose (TCM, 3pm); Show Boat (TCM, 5pm), Grease (TCM, 7pm).

If you haven’t the time to watch the run of China Beach (History Channel, 11am) on weekdays, it’s possible to catch it on Saturday mornings. Today’s episode is “Brothers,” and shows Cherry’s search for her brother and other kinds of searches for brotherhood.

They’re gonna live forever . . . reruns of Fame, that is (VH1, Noon – ).

Syndicated reruns of Buffy the Vampire Slayer begin airing in some markets, check your local listings. It looks like the Saturday run starts with the first episode of the third season (“Anne”) and the Sunday run begins with the first episode ever (“Welcome to the Hellmouth”). (In Minneapolis, “Anne” airs on Saturday on KMWB/WB at 4pm). Reruns of The Practice also begin airing in syndication this weekend, check your local listings (in Minneapolis, the pilot airs at 10:30pm on KSTP/ABC/5).

Orioles at Yankees (FX, 3pm, subject to blackout).

Magnum, P.I. is the subject of True Hollywood Story (E!, 5pm).

A family that owns a whole McDonald’s Playland set (eek!), one of the sweaters Gene Kelly wore in Singin’ In the Rain, magician memorabilia,

William Russ guest stars on the season premiere of Touched By An Angel (CBS, 7pm).

The first two episodes of Ally McBeal (FX, 7pm and 8pm).

Pilot episode of NYPD Blue (Court TV, 7pm).

Series premiere of Citizen Baines (CBS, 8pm). James Cromwell stars as a once-confident senator. He has three daughters (played by Jane Adams, Embeth Davitz, and Jacinda Barrett).

If you are in Minnesota, you can probably watch the first concert of this season for the St. Paul Symphony Orchestra tonight on PBS (PBS, 8pm). Live! For the first time in a lot of years. Featuring the music of Mozart and narration by John DeLancie.

Joanna Cassidy guest stars on the season premiere of The District (CBS, 9pm).

New episode of Mad TV (FOX, 10pm).

Season premiere of Saturday Night Live (NBC, check your local listings). With host Reese Witherspoon, musical guest Alicia Keys.

Sunday, September 29, 2001

Two classic episodes of Duckman (Comedy Central, 6am and 6:30am). The one where Bernice is discovered at a karaoke contest and the one where Duckman mistakes his sister-in-law for his late wife.

Two people have their fantasies switched around by mistake on the new Fantasy Island (Sci-Fi, 8am). Oh-oh.

’40s memorabilia, a very valuable wooden bucket, Jimi Hendrix’s amp, and a collection of perfume bottles on The Incurable Collector (A&E, 11am).

Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman are Indiscreet (AMC, 12:30pm).

Kate Jackson and Tate Donovan guest star on Ally McBeal (FX, 3pm).

Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard in (TCM, 3pm).

Another movie Essential (as hosted by Rob Reiner): Some Like It Hot (TCM, 5pm). Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe star in this classic comedy.

New episode of The Education of Max Bixford (CBS, 7pm). Richard Dreyfuss and Marcia Gay Harden star. Did any of you watch it last week? What did you think?

Ben Stiller on a new Inside the Actor’s Studio (Bravo, 7pm and 11pm).

New episodes of Doc (PAX, 7pm), Ponderosa (PAX, 8pm), and maybe Mysterious Ways (PAX, 9pm).

A woman becomes a double agent for the C.I.A. on the series premiere of Alias (ABC, 8pm). I really want to like this show and it has received some positive reviews (some that aren’t, too, of course). Jennifer Garner, Victor Garber, Michael Vartan, and Ron Rifkin star. The previews make it look like something of a Run Lola Run – La Femme Nikita hybrid.

Vincent D’Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe, Jamey Sheridan, and Courtney B. Vance star in the series premiere of Law & Order: Criminal Intent (NBC, 8pm). I want this to be good, too, ‘cuz I like the cast and I like Law & Order in general. I agree with Dick Wolf that this is a terrible timeslot for the show, it should be on at 9pm and on a weeknight probably.

New installment of Band of Brothers (HBO, 8pm).

New episode of The Practice (ABC, 9pm) that continues on from where last week’s premiere left off.

Jon Seda and Oded Fehr star in the series premiere of UC: Undercover (NBC, 9pm). What I hate: the name, Jon Seda, and the creators behind the series from the sound of their commercials (“the writer of Armageddon“? That is so not a selling point). What I like: Oded Fehr. And undercover spy stuff. I’m not expecting much from this, alas. Oh yeah, it’s about an “elite crimefighting unit.” Whatever.

If you missed the season premiere of Once and Again (Lifetime, 10pm) on Friday night, you can catch it on Sunday night.

If you missed the season premiere of Law & Order: Special Victim’s Unit (USA, 10pm) you’ll have to watch it next Sunday at 10pm. Unless they air it tonight at 10pm. One source tells me tonight will be a rerun of the ultra creepy Chad Lowe episode from last season, another says it will be the season premiere. The way it worked last year was the episodes aired a week (and two days) after when the aired on NBC.
