weekend

If you’ve been watching China Beach (History Channel, 6pm), you won’t want to miss today’s episode, which finds both K.C. and McMurphy struggling against the odds.

Science fiction fans will of course want to record the new episodes of Farscape (Sci-Fi, 8pm and 11pm) and Stargate SG-1 (Showtime, 9pm) if they’re going out on Friday night. Or just for archival purposes, darnit. Maybe Invisible Man (Sci-Fi, 7pm and 10pm), too. And they may want to watch or record the conclusion of Babylon 5 (Sci-Fi, 6pm, letterboxed)’s pilot episode.

Lily Tomlin was nominated for an Emmy for her guest appearance in “The Hat” episode of Homicide: Life on the Street (Court TV, 10pm). It’s a great dramatic performance. And it’s also a fabulous Mikey and Meldrick episode.

Dave Foley and Luther Vandross on Politically Incorrect (ABC, check your local listings).

Alan Cumming and Orlando Jones on a rerun of Late Night w/ Conan O’Brien (NBC, 11:35pm).

Westerns are featured in a marathon on TV Land this weekend. Shows include Wagon Train, Maverick, Gunsmoke, Alias Smith and Jones, .

Devilfish is the feature on Mystery Science Theater 3000 (Sci-Fi, 9am).

Camelot (AMC, 11:30am).

The Three Musketeers (AMC, 3pm). It’s the 1974 one with Richard Chamberlain, Michael York, Christopher Lee, et al.

James Cagney, Jack Lemmon, Henry Fonda, and William Powell in Mister Roberts (AMC, 7pm).

“Flat is beautiful” episode of Good Eats (Food Network, 8pm and 11pm). It’s about flatbreads, including pizza.

I can’t help it, I really like The Chronicle (Sci-Fi, 8pm and 11pm). Jon Polito, Rena Sofer, and Curtis Armstrong are among the stars.

Sunday, August 26, 2001

Cary Grant in Hitchcock’s Suspicion (TCM, 7am).

Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda in The Lady Eve (TCM, 9am). A very funny movie.

The pilot movie of Witchblade (TNT, 9am-11am). Followed by a bunch of episodes (all of them?) of the series (TNT, 11am – 10pm). Great opportunity to catch up with this show. Yancy Butler stars. It’s fun fluff as these things go.

The Incurable Collector (A&E, 11am). Not that I am one or anything.

West Side Story (TCM, 11am). It’s just like Romeo and Juliet, but with singing and dancing.

I like the movie I.Q. (HBO, 3pm), even though it has it’s flaws.

A Streetcar Named Desire (TCM, 5pm) is another Essential movie.

“Puff the Magic Pastry” episode of Good Eats (Food Network, 5:30pm).

Wonder why the folks at Teevee.org named Futurama (FOX, 6pm) the best half-hour show of the season? Watch and see. It’s the one where Fry is in an asylum and fed motor oil. Love. This. Show.

Basic cable premiere of Rushmore (Comedy Central, 7pm). One of my favorite films of the last ten years and no, I don’t know why I like it so much. Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, and Olivia Williams star in this film from Wes Anderson. The soundtrack is also among my favorite things.

Ed Harris on a rerun of Inside the Actor’s Studio (Bravo, 7pm). It’s a better-than-usual episode probably because Ed Harris is a way-better-than-average actor.

New episodes of Strong Medicine (Lifetime, 7pm) and Any Day Now (Lifetime, 9pm).

“Do you know, where you’re goin’ to?” Diana Ross and Billy Dee Williams star in Mahogany (AMC, 7pm).

Madonna Live: The Drowned World Tour (HBO, 8pm). Live broadcast of the final show of Madonna’s summer tour.

Let’s Bowl (Comedy Central, 9:30pm) is a new series where disputes are settled via a unique bowling match. This show started out on cable access in Minneapolis and is filmed at the Starlight Lanes in Minneapolis and so I’m totally biased towards liking it. The first Comedy Central episode aired last week and was pretty good. (Note my Minnesotan enthusiasm. “Not bad, you betcha.”).
